Hacker Gary Bowser pleads guilty to piracy and agrees to pay Nintendo $ 4.5 million

What happened now? Sadly, named Gary Bowser, a member of the hacking group Team-Xecuter, pleaded guilty to charges of selling hardware and software that allowed people to play unauthorized or pirated games on various consoles, including some of Nintendo’s. This comes after Nintendo of America, whose president and famous character named Bowser, filed a lawsuit against the hacker earlier this year.

Described as one of the most notorious pirate groups in the video game world. Department of JusticeTeam-Xecuter sold a variety of tools that allowed buyers to bypass the security measures of console manufacturers.

Nintendo said in its lawsuit that Bowser has been making and selling Nintendo jailbreak devices since at least 2013 and selling them for DS, 3DS and Nintendo Wii; the organization is well known for its Nintendo Switch modchips. He was arrested at the same time as Max Loirene, another Team-Xecuter member, last October and charged with 11 felonies.

Team-Xecuter has previously stated that it is not a “bunch of copyright infringing software pirates” and that its products allow users to make legitimate cartridge backups and play homemade games. He also accused Nintendo of censorship, monopoly control and legal intimidation tactics. Those who make consoles and games disagree with this point of view. Nintendo was particularly annoyed, and last year the US government joined in its pursuit of Team-Xecuter.

Bowser, a 51-year-old Canadian citizen, was arrested in the Dominican Republic in September 2020 before being deported to the United States. He initially denied the charges against him, but later in a plea agreement admitted his involvement in a bypass conspiracy and trade in bypass devices, both of which carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison. He also agreed to pay $ 4.5 million in reimbursement to Nintendo and help find all of Team-Xecuter’s remaining assets.

French citizen Max Loirene, 48, was also “arrested abroad in connection with the charges in this case” last year. The US government is seeking to extradite Luarne to America so that he can be brought to justice in the country.

“Imagine that something you invented was stolen from you and then sold and sold to customers around the world. This is exactly what the Xecutor team did, ”said Raymond Duda of the FBI. “This is a great example of why the FBI has made preventing intellectual property theft a priority. These arrests should make it clear to potential pirates that the FBI does not consider these crimes a game. “
