Google TV could expand into fitness and improve smart home capabilities in the near future

In short: Google Android TV is used in smart TVs produced by many of the industry’s largest OEMs. However, Google TV, the launcher developed by Google and installed on top of the OS, is not as well known. Google plans to improve this in 2022 by adding new features and improving content provider apps.

Director of Product Management Rob Caruso outlined something of what we can expect from the Google TV user interface in 2022. He made no advance announcements, opting instead to provide general guidance on Google’s research.

Some of the new features may be related to fitness, offering integration with Google fitness services (Google Fit, Fitbit) and third-party services. Caruso also mentioned improved integration with smart home controls similar to new features on Android devices. In addition, Google TV users can also look forward to more communication apps like Zoom and more free live TV channels, allowing users to watch content even if they don’t have an active subscription with the content provider.

In addition to new features, Google also wants to improve existing content provider apps, including Netflix, which still doesn’t allow users to add movies and shows to a Google TV watchlist. Caruso promised that “everything will work out”, but we will have to wait and see how things develop.

Caruso expects new features and improvements in content provider apps to boost Google TV’s popularity. Google currently has 250 device partners worldwide, seven of which are among the largest TV OEMs in the industry. However, most of them use old Android TV or custom versions.

“Over time, we bet and wish that using Google TV is the preferred choice for us and our partners that we deploy, but Android TV is still there, still being deployed, and obviously still supported,” he said. Caruso.

With 110 million monthly active Android TVs worldwide, TCL is likely the OEM selling the most Google TVs. At CES 2022, the TV manufacturer claims it sells about 10 million Android and Google TV per year. This is almost 10 percent of the entire Android TV market. During CES, the company also announced its new $10,000 Google TV 8K.
