Gaming monitor shipments drop for the first time

Perspective: The gaming monitor market has seen remarkable growth over the past few years. We’ve seen 4K 144Hz displays pop up, OLED monitors hit the shelves, and there’s even been an increase in TV-sized gaming displays lately. Despite this creative boom and a wide variety of products for the consumer market, shipments have fallen by 10 percent since 2021.

Anita Wang of Trendforce issued a report on this subject, which also covers details such as sales of panel types and screen curvature. 22.8 million gaming monitors were shipped in 2021, compared to approximately 20.5 million units shipped in 2022.

Trendforce believes this drop is due to high inflation in Europe and the US, as well as long delays in new graphics card releases, leaving consumers feeling there is no reason to upgrade their monitor.

Wang talks about panel curvature depending on shipments, noting that approximately 41% of all gaming monitors shipped in 2021 were curved. Wang estimates that number will increase to 44% by the end of 2022 and possibly 46% in 2023. The data could mean that the group of people who swear at curved displays could soon become a vocal minority, assuming trends continue.

In terms of panel types, VA holds 48 percent of the market share. IPS follows closely behind, accounting for 43 percent of shipments. The once dominant TN panel now accounts for only nine percent of shipments. Wang expects VA to break the 50% barrier by the end of 2022 and TN to drop to four percent.

OLED monitors have recently hit the consumer market with Alienware launching their AW3423DW monitor in early 2022. The Alienware display is just the first of many that are expected to arrive soon.

Trendforce expects OLED panels to have roughly 0.4 percent market share when they release their official 2022 report sometime next year, with estimates reaching two percent in 2023.

Wang also expects the gaming monitor market to recover from this slight drop in shipments, with shipments estimated at 21.6 million in 2023. Wang believes this will be partly due to manufacturers trying new methods to appeal to budget-conscious consumers by offering better prices and specifications for their entry-level monitors.
