EA will shut down online servers for several games in the coming months

In short: Electronic Arts is gearing up to shut down the online component of several games in the coming months, and some of your favorites may end up on the list. Additional titles will no doubt be added to the list as we approach 2023.

According to EA Online service update databases, Dragon Age Origins (multiplayer screenshot server), Army of Two: The 40th Day, and Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel will stop working by the end of October. In November, gamers will lose the ability to play online in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PS3 and Xbox 360), Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (Xbox 360, including Kane’s Wrath expansion), Mercenaries 2 (PS3 and Xbox 360) and Onslaught . In December, Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings (for Luna+) and Super Mega Baseball 3 (for Luna+) will disappear.

Hits keep coming in 2023 as Gatling Gears, Mirror’s Edge, NBA Jam: On Fire Edition and Shank 2 hit the cutting board in January. Some games, such as NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, have achievements related to online play. As soon as these servers go down, it will be impossible to receive these rewards.

Games with online components open up a whole new world of possibilities that are often taken for granted.

Not so long ago, online games did not exist. Multiplayer meant gathering around the same TV with friends or family and either watching the same screen or playing in split screen mode. PC gamers had the luxury of LAN parties, but that involved lugging around heavy equipment and spending hours tying things up and introducing everyone to the same versions of the games you wanted to play. It was very troublesome, but also very fun.

Early attempts at multiplayer console games on platforms like XBAND for the SNES and Sega Genesis had the right idea, but were simply too early to hit the market because the infrastructure to support online play wasn’t mature enough. You’d be hard-pressed to find a quality game these days that doesn’t have a multiplayer component.
