Disney+ will get an ad-supported tier later this year

Editor’s opinion: Later this year, Disney plans to expand access to its consumer-facing streaming service by adding an ad-supported tier. The company hasn’t given details about its new plan, but if we have to guess, the ad-supported tier probably won’t be completely free. Instead, it’s likely to be more affordable than the standard ad-free offering – possibly in the range of $3.99 to $4.99 per month.

To date, access to Disney+ is $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year prepaid, which works out to approximately $6.67 per month. There’s also a Disney Bundle that consists of Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu (an ad-supported tier) for $13.99/month, or $19.99/month if you want ad-free Hulu.

Rita Ferro, president of Disney advertising, said advertisers are demanding the opportunity to be part of Disney+. “Disney+ with Ads will offer marketers the most premium streaming environment for our most beloved brands, Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and National Geographic,” the executive added.

Disney said it views the ad-supported offering as a building block on its path to reaching 230 million to 260 million Disney+ subscribers by FY24. If you remember, the company ended 2021 with 129.8 million Disney+ subscribers. In comparison, industry leader Netflix ended last year with 222 million paying subscribers, and Paramount+ ended 2022 with 32.8 million subscribers.

Speaking of Paramount+, there’s still time for new and returning subscribers to get three months of Paramount+ at 80 percent off. However, this offer expires on March 7, so you need to act fast if you want to.
