Cooler features of the Ford F-150 Lightning Electric

In the race to bring an electric truck to market, it can be difficult to distinguish.

And in an effort to differentiate themselves from the pack, startups and established car manufacturers have promised to equip their future pickups with unique and sometimes foreign characteristics. Rivian provides a “gear tunnel” that can accommodate a sliding kitchen, GMC’s Hummer EV can drive diagonally, and the Tesla Cybertruck doesn’t look like a truck before (or probably after, for that matter).

Ma Ford F-150 Lightning, which debuted this week, is a little different. In designing the truck, Ford has pointed to a fine line between producing something new, but not radically different from its famous F-Series truck trust line. The Lightning isn’t Cybertruck – and that’s exactly what Ford intended.

Yet, even though the electric vehicle has a cabin and a general design compared to the other F-150s in Ford’s stable, it has some unique features that distinguish it from its parent combustion engines.

Love them or hate them, it seems that maximum infotainment screens are here to stay – at least in EVs. Following the trend set by Tesla, the F-150 Lightning is equipped with a 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen over the Lariat and Platinum coatings. The lower cuts get a narrower 12-inch display.

But Ford has acknowledged that its customers still appreciate physical buttons and don’t want to have to navigate infinite menus to access essential vehicle functions. So its designers have included some analog controls and, interestingly, have embedded a volume knob right at the bottom of the 15.5-inch screen. It’s the same installation that Ford put in the Mustang Mach-E.

The Lariat and Platinum trucks come with Ford’s latest Sync 4A infotainment system, and all models have Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation and WiFi hotspot capabilities.

Ford has begun to offer mobile generator capacity in the latest generation F-150. But, of course, the Blue Oval gave its first all-electric truck an even greater ability to power things in workplaces, campsites, tailgates, and the like.

The conventional F-150 offers a 2.0 kilowatt system, while the hybrid F-150 PowerBoost blows up to 2.4 kilowatts or, optionally, 7.2 kilowatts. The F-150 Lightning can provide up to 9.6 kilowatts of power – a combination of up to 2.4 kilowatts from the outlets in the frunk and 7.2 kilowatts from the cabin and bed. This capability comes standard on Lariat and Platinum coatings, and is an option for the XLT.

For example, Ford says 9.6 kilowatts are more than enough to power a hatchback with a projector, PA system, portable hot tub, lights, portable AC, refrigerator and two blenders. The truck will warn owners when the battery charge drops too low.

However, the F-150 Lightning’s mobile generator features don’t end with tailgating. The truck can serve as a last resort of power during blackout and emergency thanks to a feature called Power Intelligent Backup Power.

When inserted from Ford’s home Charge Station Pro charger – which comes standard with the wide-range truck – the F-150 Lightning will automatically start powering a homeowner in the event of a power loss. Ford says the 9.6-kilowatt Pro Power Onboard system can power the average home for three days on a full charge.

Ford also plans to launch a feature called Ford Intelligent Power, which will allow Lightning to power a home not only during emergencies, but also during hours of high-cost, peak energy.

Since they don’t have a front engine taking up space, many EVs have a front trunk that adds a valuable charging room. Ford has given the F-150 Lightning what it claims is the biggest frunk in the industry: the Mega Power Frunk.

The compartment adds 400 liters of storage space and has power outlets and USB plugs, to boot. It’s enough space to store two sets of golf clubs or three suitcases, says Ford.

In addition, the Mega Power Frunk has a compartment under the floor with a removable cover to store extra tall items. A drainage hole in the floor – which is also found in the Mach-E frunk – means owners can eat in mangoes or ice cubes and use them as a cooler.

Ford has introduced a new feature on the F-150 Lightning to simplify the attachment of a trailer. The Pro Trailer Hitch Assist feature – which is an option on the XLT and Lariat models and comes standard on the Platinum truck – allows the F-150 to automatically control steering, braking and accelerator to support itself. a trailer.

Carrying anxiety – the fear of running out of battery without a nearby charging station – is one of the main obstacles to mass EV adoption. Ford’s Intelligent Range feature is the car’s attempt to put drivers at ease.

The feature aims to provide real-time interval calculations on the panel based on factors such as weather conditions and the amount of power a driver uses. The truck also has integrated scales so you can take into account how much stuff is in the bed and how much is towed when it generates a load estimate. Ford says this feature will improve over time with software updates in the air.
