Baldur’s Gate 3 gets a graphical overhaul, DLSS support, and the Sorcerer class.

Long-awaited: Larian Studios hosted their last Panel From Hell event today. During the live stream, studio head Sven Winke donned his basic plate armor and had some fun with another developer to showcase some of Baldur’s Gate 3’s latest materials, features, and enhancements – all released today with the game’s sixth major patch.

Complete list of patch notes too long include or describe here, but we’ll touch on some of the highlights. The first important part of the patch, and probably the most interesting for our readers, is the inclusion of AI upscaling technology into the game. Baldur’s Gate 3 has added Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technologies and can be enabled by players looking to squeeze extra performance out of their gameplay.

I tested the Quality preset for both FSR and DLSS and found that both give me about 20 frames per second boost. That’s more than 60 at 1440p (tested on 2080 Ti and 8700K). Raising the FSR was easy small slightly higher than DLSS, but it was also a little more blurry, so I will most likely stick with Nvidia tech for now.

In addition to these technologies, Baldur’s Gate 3 has undergone a complete graphic overhaul. Lighting, textures, animations, color grading and particle effects have been greatly improved. Other visual features such as volumetric fog, real-time clouds and atmospheric scattering are brand new additions. In addition, now your characters can get bruises, scratches and bloodshed during the fight – these effects will remain visible even after the end of the fight (their intensity depends on your current HP).

In terms of gameplay, Baldur’s Gate 3 now offers a wider range of “weapon action”: special weapon-related skills that are designed to bring combat characters such as fighters, rangers, and rogues to life. Since these classes don’t have access to spells, Larian wanted to give them more tactical options in the midst of combat. Mobile Shot lets you fire your crossbow even after dashing, while Backbreaker can knock your enemies down, making it easier to hit melee characters.

Then, of course, there are the two main points of today’s patch: the Wizard class and an entirely new area known as “Grimforge”. We’ll let you discover the latter, but it takes place at the end of the currently available Early Access storyline, significantly extending the game time by a few precious hours and allowing you to meet some exciting new characters.

On the other hand, the Sorcerer is a new class of spellcaster, whose power does not come from book training or deity, as in the case of Wizards and Clerics, but from within. You can choose between Draconic Bloodline or Wild Magic subclasses, each with unique passive and active effects. Wild magic sorcerers, for example, occasionally trigger Waves of Wild Magic, a random effect from a list of 10. You can get a free teleport or summon a hostile fire demon; you never know.

Draconic Bloodline casters will instead gain an additional spell that depends on which dragon ancestor they choose. The Green Dragon’s ancestor gives you the Ray of Sickness spell, and the Golden Dragon’s ancestor gives you Disguise.

We will allow our readers (at least those who play Baldur’s Gate 3) to discover the rest of the content of patch 6. All in all, this is a major update, and I look forward to playing the final version of the game whenever did not come out.
