AU Optronics showcases 480Hz laptop and desktop displays

Why is it important: AU Optronics, a major display panel manufacturer, just showed off several of the new display technologies they are working on at SID Display Week 2022. 480Hz, ultra-wide display and AmLED for laptop. (adaptive mini-LED) screens and laptop display with built-in cameras.

The latest 24″ 480Hz AUO panel is for monitors, while the 16″ panel is for laptop displays. Both are advertised as having near 1ms response times, Full HD resolution, and using TN technology.

It’s interesting to see that TN is still being used for high-end displays, given that we’re getting more and more high refresh rate IPS and VA panels.

AUO didn’t mention when we’ll see the first products using these displays on the market, though. TFTCentral claims they are scheduled to go into production sometime this year.

It is worth noting that advertising I tested a prototype monitor at 480Hz a few years ago, although it was only capable of running at that refresh rate at 960×540. In this article, they found a noticeable difference between 240Hz and 480Hz, albeit with greatly diminished returns.

It also raises the question of whether video cards can play games at such high frame rates. These displays will mostly be used for esports games like Valorant and CS:GO where 500+ fps at 1080p can be achieved with a decent GPU and a suitable CPU.

AUO also showcased a pair of AmLED (Adaptive mini LED, not to be confused with AMOLED) panels, a laptop display with built-in cameras designed to get rid of notches and thick bezels, several screens made for automotive use, a ChLC tablet color panel. which uses ambient light instead of highlights and more.
