Wednesday Apple released iOS 15.3 for beta with a slight change in the wording of the iCloud Private Relay warning. Private Relay is an encryption feature for paid iCloud subscribers that hides their IP address and masks their browsing activity so even Apple can’t see them.

Earlier this month, some users received an error message stating that their carrier was blocking the use of this feature.

“Private relay is disabled for your cellular plan. Your cellular plan does not support ‌iCloud‌ Private Relay. If ‌iCloud‌ Private Relay is disabled, this network can track your internet activity and your IP address is not hidden from known trackers or websites. “

Even though carriers such as Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and Telefonica have openly opposed Private Relay and lobbied regulators in Europe to block it just a few days ago, the carriers have denied blocking the feature. In fact, T-Mobile told Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that it determined the bug was due to it being disabled by default in iOS, not because T-Mobile blocked it.

He shared this information with Apple and as of Wednesday the error message has been changed to the following:

“Private relay is disabled for your cellular plan. Private relay is either not supported by your cellular plan or has been disabled in your cellular settings. hidden from known trackers or websites.”

Apple support pages also indicate that the error may occur due to disabling one or more settings. The first is the main Private Relay (Beta) toggle in the iCloud menu. The second and third are in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options & Settings > Wi-Fi > Additional Information. You should also enable Private Relay in these settings.

Apple states that even with all the toggles enabled, it’s still possible to come across websites, networks, or services that are incompatible with Private Relay, which can cause the error. Users can temporarily disable private relay to avoid the message in such situations. Users can also disable this feature for individual networks.
