Apple Introduces Refreshed AirPods with Spatial Sound, Longer Battery Life, and Improved Reliability

In a nutshell: Apple, as expected, unveiled an updated version of its flagship AirPods wireless earbuds on Monday, the first update since the launch of the second generation in March 2019. This time around, Apple has tweaked an already foolproof recipe to bring even more performance, battery life, and value to its popular wireless earbuds.

V redesigned AirPods have a new contour design that should better suit more users. To reduce their appearance in use, Apple has shortened the stem from the previous generation. The earbuds also use the same force sensor as the AirPods Pro for media control and are IPX4 rated on both the earbuds and charging case.

The headphones also have a dedicated driver with high dynamic range amplifier. Together, these two elements create what Apple describes as powerful bass with crisp, clear highs. An acoustic grill covers the microphone to reduce wind noise.

Elsewhere, you’ll find dynamic head tracking spatial audio with Dolby Atmos support. Apple has also introduced an adaptive equalizer feature, which adjusts the sound in real time based on how the earbuds fit into the user’s ear to accommodate for what might be lost due to differences in fit.

AirPods still offer one-touch setup when pairing with other Apple devices, and audio sharing allows users to stream between two sets of AirPods when using an Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Despite being smaller, Apple has managed to squeeze an extra hour of battery life into the new AirPods. Now you get up to six hours of listening time and up to four hours of talk time on a single charge. When you’re in a rush, a quick five-minute charge can provide up to an hour of listening time.

With the included charging case (which is now also MagSafe compatible), you can expect up to 30 hours of total listening time (six hours from the earbuds plus four full charges from the case).

New third generation AirPods available for order starting today in the US and over 26 other countries, in-store availability is slated for October 26th. Online shoppers can also choose to have Apple engrave a mix of emojis, text, and numbers on the battery compartment for personalized customization.

V AirPods second generation adhere to another cycle, which is now priced at $ 129, along with AirPods Pro with a $ 249 MagSafe charging case. V AirPods MaxApple wireless on-ear headphones are also found and can be taken home for $ 549.

It’s also worth noting that new subscribers can get Apple Music for free for six months when purchasing any AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.
