Apple announces media event in California on September 14

Why is it important: Apple has sent out invitations to its next major event, at which the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 13 family of smartphones. We still don’t know if Apple is planning one major event in September or posting its fall announcements in a matter of weeks or months. but we have to find out soon enough.

The invitation has the tagline “California Streaming”, likely a reference to the fact that it will be streaming with pre-taped segments due to the ongoing pandemic.

The iPhone is expected to be offered in four different models this year, just like last year’s iPhone 12. The new iPhone is rumored to add several camera enhancements, including a portrait mode video version with AI capabilities and an improved ultra-wide-angle camera lens.

The iPhone 13 family is expected to be powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic processor and will ship with a 120Hz display. Some speculate that the always-on display could also be in the mix, but we’re not sure about that rumor.

However, Scuttlebutt, which does have legs, envisions support for satellite communications in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This rumor surfaced unexpectedly late last month and, if true, could allow iPhone 13 users to make calls and send text messages without a traditional cellular or Wi-Fi connection. This feature will most likely be reserved for emergencies.

Apple could also unveil an updated version of its smartwatches next week and possibly third-generation AirPods. Later rumors suggest that the release of the Apple Watch Series 7 may be delayed due to complex upgrades and manufacturing issues.

Everything is going down starting at 10 a.m. PST on September 14, and it will be viewable on the company’s website.
