AMD said it is preparing Radeon Super Resolution, an alternative to FSR for “nearly” all games.

In the context: Similar to Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology, AMD FSR requires additional developer effort to implement into a game. However, Team Red may try to change this by making the FSR upscaling algorithm available through Radeon software for any game that can run in exclusive full screen mode.

Back in June, AMD launched its competitor Nvidia’s DLSS technology in the form of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), an open source technology that runs on both AMD and Nvidia hardware, as well as upcoming Intel Alchemist GPUs.

As Tim Schisser pointed out in his preliminary FSR analysis, AMD has been able to come up with an upscaling solution that works reasonably well when playing back at 4K and 1440p resolutions unless you use more aggressive performance presets. It can’t match Nvidia’s DLSS 2.0 or later in fine detail reproduction, and it suffers from more flickering and motion artifacts, but it offers a similar performance boost.

Six months later, adoption looks pretty strong, with 70 current and future games offering support for Team Red’s non-AI scaling technology. However, VideoCardz report says the company is also working on another version of FSR that is designed to work “in almost all games.”

If true, this is likely being crafted as a response to Nvidia’s Image Scaling Tool, which was recently updated to provide FSR-style scaling and sharpening capabilities through the Nvidia Control Panel. However, there is a catch – in order to use the upcoming AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) feature, you need to use an RX 5000 series GPU or newer and run the game in exclusive full screen mode.

Unlike FSR, Radeon Super Resolution doesn’t require developers to implement it as part of their games rendering pipeline, which means you don’t have to wait before you can use it in your favorite games. The trade-off is that FSR leaves the UI and game HUD elements at their native resolution, while the new solution simply applies the scaling algorithm to the entire video output. The resulting image will be softer than the FSR, but some people may agree with this on a lower-end graphics card like the Radeon RX 5500 XT.

As usual, take this a little skeptically. That said, AMD is expected to announce RSR at CES 2022 alongside the Radeon RX 6500 XT and Radeon RX 6400, so hopefully we’ll find out more soon.
