AMD Prepares 4800S Desktop Kit Based on Redesigned Console APUs

In the context: With GPUs still well above the manufacturer’s MSRP and manufacturers now selling off-the-shelf desktops without a GPU, many people are either forced to play the wait-and-see game or pay exorbitant prices. For some, AMD will soon have a workaround in the form of a console APU-based desktop kit that ships with the Radeon RX 6600 graphics card.

Earlier this year, AMD began repurposing Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 chips with faulty GPUs into desktop kits. These are integrated solutions that include a small mini-ITX motherboard, soldered GDDR6 chips for system memory, one PCIe expansion slot, and various storage and peripheral connectivity options. The company quietly released the 4700S desktop kit in June for around $ 320, but we have no official data on how many units have sold since then.

In accordance with VideoCardzAMD is currently preparing a new 4800S Desktop Kit that will include the same reworked faulty APUs from current generation consoles. The APU in the 4700S integrates an 8-core, 16-thread Zen 2 processor that has a base frequency of 3.6GHz and can bump up to 4.0GHz, but the 4800S is expected to ship with a slightly overclocked APU with more memory. The 4700S desktop kit comes with 8 or 16 gigabytes of soldered memory, which might also be the case with the new kit.

Interestingly, the new 4800S Desktop Kit has a micro-ATX form factor and is equipped with a PCIe 4.0 slot, while the 4700S had a PCIe 2.0 slot limited to four lanes, which significantly limited the use of graphics cards. The new kit also has an M.2 slot and Wi-Fi connectivity and will support AM4 CPU coolers.

The report says AMD will pair the 4800S with a TUL (PowerColor) Radeon RX 6600 graphics card, which should be enough to run recent games at 1080p. The exact release date is not clear, but insiders believe AMD is targeting Q1 2022 for the 4800S.
