Amazon may be making Blade Runner TV series

In the context: If you thought Blade Runner 2049 was the end of the franchise’s gaming content, think again. Back in November last year, Ridley Scott confirmed that a Blade Runner show was in development, much to the excitement of many 2049 fans. However, most of the details were still up in the air, such as who would fund the project, what it was called, and what platforms it might be available on. Fortunately, new reports have given us these and other answers.

According to Variety, the series is titled Blade Runner 2099and it will be a sequel to Blade Runner 2049. Based on the title, we’re assuming that BR 2099 will take place fifty years from now – but it’s too early to tell if there’s more to come. returning characters, locations, or plot points.

Fortunately, these decisions are likely not to be strictly budget-driven. The project is reportedly funded out of Amazon’s rich pockets, which likely means the show will be – at least temporarily – exclusive to Amazon Prime Video.

If so, this is a smart move on Amazon’s part. Not only did Blade Runner 2049 do reasonably well at the box office (it’s not The Avengers, but no one would have expected it to be), it remains a popular talking point among cinephiles and general moviegoers alike. The film is often praised for its art direction, acting, deep themes, and especially for its excellent soundtrack. As long as those in charge of 2099 understand what makes a good Blade Runner movie, Amazon can succeed.

Blade Runner 2099 is executive produced by Silka Louise, Andrew Kosow, Broderick Johnson and Ridley Scott. From the looks of it, there’s a possibility that Scott could direct a few episodes of the series, provided he can get the ball rolling.

As any movie buff knows, projects like this get canceled as often as they’re announced. So while this is exciting news – and Amazon is reportedly speeding up the scripting process – we shouldn’t get our hopes up until we have confirmation that production is well under way.
