What is the Apple U1 chip? Explanation of ultra-wideband chip

What is the Apple U1 chip?

The U1 is an Apple-manufactured chip that uses ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to bring spatial awareness to the product line.

The U1 chip was originally launched alongside the iPhone 11 in 2019 and has since spread to new smartphones, smartwatches and other Apple devices.

The co-processor sits alongside other chips, allowing Apple devices to pinpoint each other’s location with a level of accuracy greater than what’s possible with GPS or Bluetooth alone.

This allows features like the ability to share a file via AirDrop by simply pointing one phone at another phone, with U1 automatically placing that device at the top of your list. This makes it easier to find the person you want to send the file to when there are multiple devices in the room.

Ultra Wideband is the technology behind Apple’s AirTags, with tile-like trackers using UWB to send precise directions to your phone via the Find My app.

Another use for the U1 is listening to music with the HomePod Mini. This chip allows you to stream music played on your iPhone to your HomePod (and vice versa) by simply holding your phone up to the speaker.
