What is a photon engine? Apple has introduced a new iPhone 14 camera feature called Photonic Engine, which promises better images in low light.

The very Apple-named computational photography technology combines hardware and software elements of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro lines and will provide improved performance (Apple claims a “giant leap”) for shots taken in medium to low light. .

On the main, telephoto, and TrueDepth cameras, performance is 2x better, while the ultra-wide camera can score 3x better in low light. This feature exists separately from the existing Night Mode, which iPhone users can choose to combat lighting conditions.

How does a photon engine work?

Apple says this is essentially an extension of its Deep Fusion imaging technology, which launched with the iPhone 11 in 2019 and continues to support computational photography capabilities across the mobile phone lineup.

Basically, it uses machine learning to process photos on a pixel-by-pixel basis, which the company says optimizes texture, detail, and noise across the entire image.

What the Photonic Engine does is apply this technology sooner than before to provide a “significant increase in quality”. It says that subtle details will be preserved and colors will be better. It will also work with all iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max cameras.

On the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple will combine this technology with a 48-megapixel main camera, which is a significant increase from the 12-megapixel sensor that Apple has previously offered in its iPhones. However, in most cases, the company only uses this advanced sensor to provide more light. The resulting photos will only be 12 megapixels in standard mode. You can get 48MP shots in ProRAW mode.
