The Nokia C series is “the link between features and smartphones”.

HMD Global has unveiled three new entry-level Nokia smartphones at MWC 2022 in Barcelona to be released in the UK and Europe, and when we say entry-level, that’s what we mean.

Nokia’s three new C-series phones are said to serve as a bridge between feature phones and smartphones for those who haven’t made the leap yet, with lightweight smart features and a strong focus on durability and battery life.

On the face of it, it’s a niche attraction, but with feature phones still popular among older adults – a 2018 survey found that 40% of US residents over 65 still use them – it’s a market teeming with opportunity.

Nokia C2 second edition

The new lineup starts with the rather strangely named Nokia C2 Second Edition.

It’s the simplest of the line, with features like a 5.7-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) display, an unnamed 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1GB or 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, and Android 11 Go, but durable construction. and the removable 2400mAh battery – a particularly unique feature in 2022 – should appeal to those using regular phones.

There’s also a 5MP camera on the back and a 2MP front camera – both with flash – along with GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack and 4G connectivity, and while you won’t get full Android Go OS updates, owners can expect two of the year. security updates.

As you might have guessed from the spec sheet, the Nokia C2 Second Edition is available for just £74.99 / €79 (around $89) and it will be available in two colors when released in May.

Nokia S21

If a feature phone owner wants something a little more interesting for their first smartphone, the €99 Nokia C21 (around £82/$112) might appeal, and for just €20 more than the C2 Second Edition, you’ll get a lot of cash.

The Nokia C21 features a large 6.5-inch display with 1600 x 900 resolution, much higher than its entry-level sibling. This is paired with an enhanced 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, complete with camera effects including HDR (high dynamic range), panorama and beautification for key shots.

It should also perform a little better using the Unisoc SC9863A chipset, along with 2GB of RAM, while the beefed up 3000mAh detachable battery should also keep you going a little longer.

You’ll also find key features, including 4G connectivity, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Android 11 Go with two years of security updates.

Specifications aside, the matte plastic finish, silver and blue color options, and Nokia’s signature round camera cutout all look great and help enhance the overall look of this budget smartphone.

Pricing and availability of the Nokia C21 in the UK has yet to be confirmed.

Nokia S21 Plus

The Nokia C21 Plus sits at the top of Nokia’s new collection, but starting at £99 it’s still in the budget end of the market.

You may not immediately notice the differences between the C21 and C21 Plus, both are quite similar in some respects, share the same 6.5″ HD+ display, Unisoc SC9863A chipset with 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, 4G connectivity , fingerprint reader, GPS, and 3.5mm headphone jack, but key specs, including battery life and camera, have been improved.

The standard C21 Plus has a larger 4,000mAh non-removable battery that matches many of today’s mid-range smartphones, and paired with an HD+ display, Nokia claims it can last two days on a single charge.

If that’s not enough for your needs, you can opt for a model with a beefed up 5050mAh battery that also comes with an upgraded 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The top-spec model should offer better battery life and slightly better performance, especially when switching between apps, while the extra storage lets you download more Android Go apps from the Android Go Play store. It all depends on how much more expensive the 5050mAh model is, as the price has yet to be confirmed.

No matter which model you choose, you’ll find a competitive 13MP camera as well as a supporting 2MP depth-of-field camera on the back, complete with a Portrait shooting mode that automatically blurs the background in shots while still maintaining sharpness of the main subject. . What’s more, there are also HDR effects, panoramas, and beautifications. This is coupled with a 5MP front camera for video calls and selfies.

It is also the most durable of the range, offering basic but officially certified IP52 water and dust resistance.

Nokia has confirmed that the Nokia C21 Plus will be available in the UK from the end of April, with exact dates yet to be confirmed.
