It’s official: OnePlus Nord 2 is coming and we have the first details on the brand’s next mid-range device, including an in-depth look at the chipset.
In a surprising move, OnePlus has announced the existence of this device confirming that it will discontinue using Qualcomm chipset. Instead, this will be the first North with a MediaTek SoC (system-on-chip).
Internally aside, we still know a few concrete details about North 2. It’s not yet confirmed when the phone will actually arrive (or how much it will cost). However there have been some losses, so we have some information to continue.
Here’s everything we know about North 2, including when it might launch, how much it might cost and more information about the new MediaTek chipset.
OnePlus Nord 2 release date
While we’re not sure when the OnePlus Nord 2 will launch, it looks like we might see the phone in the summer. The first North was introduced in July 2020, so a July launch would make sense for its successor.
As noticed by @yabhishekhd on Twitter, the Indian OnePlus website said that OnePlus Nord 2 would be “coming on July 22.” This fits in with some of the previous speculation we’ve seen around the launch date.
We also expect to see the phone launch sooner rather than later, since OnePlus has now revealed the chipset that powers the device and what it will be called.
The OnePlus Nord 2 price
As for the price, we expect the successor to the mid-range to fall in a price range similar to the OnePlus North.
The North has an RRP of £ 379 for the 8GB / 128GB configuration or £ 469 for 12GB / 256GB. It has not been officially launched in the US.
OnePlus Nord design 2
It looks a lot like the OnePlus Nord 2 will take a lot of inspiration from its more expensive siblings in terms of looks. Well, that’s if these filtered returns are to be believed.
New makes yes 91mobile is OnLeaks shows a device with a rectangular camera housing at the bottom that closely resembles the OnePlus 9. The report says that the phone maintains the alert slider (a feature abandoned by the North CE) and will have a USB- port C per charge.
You can see the renditions below.
Of course, until a product is officially announced its best to take all these leaks with a pinch of salt.
Features and characteristics of OnePlus Nord 2
Has been confirmed that the OnePlus Nord 2 abandon Qualcomm chips for a MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC. This is a modified version of the current 1200 available that will be exclusive to OnePlus and have a greater focus on AI processes.
In March, Android Central reported that the Nord 2 would be powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 chipset. Until now, OnePlus has always used Qualcomm chipsets, such as the Snapdragon 765G found in the North.
OnePlus said the Dimensity 1200-AI will focus on enhancing photography with dedicated AI modes and that it will help the display by converting SDR content to HDR and improve detail in standard definition content. Of course we’ll have to review the phone to see if these benefits make a noticeable difference.
The only detail that has been officially confirmed is that this will be one 5G phone – hardly a surprise considering that the original North was also 5G.
OnLeaks is 91mobiles.com as well reported the use of the Dimensity chipset, along with a few other details. The device is said to have a 6.43-inch display and a 4500mAh battery.
For the cameras we could look for a 50MP main sensor, paired with an 8MP secondary sensor and 2MP with a 32MP selfie camera.
The original North was large and easily one of the best high-end phones. So can North 2 continue this trend? Well, all the signs so far indicate yes. Switching to a new chipset is a risk, but the Dimensity 1200 is very capable and could lead to higher quality performance at a lower price. A lot of things are up in the air right now, but hopefully a full release won’t be too far off.
