What to expect from the Snapdragon tech summit

The headline news will be the launch of the latest Snapdragon 8-series flagship, which is expected to be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 after Qualcomm announced a new chipset naming scheme – although the official name has yet to be confirmed, so it might still surprise us.

The company confirmed that the launch will take place on the first day, but said little about what to expect. We’ve already seen surprisingly strong specs from the recently released MediaTek Dimensity 9000, which is poised to be a bigger competitor than ever for Snapdragon silicon, so Qualcomm will have a lot to match – likely including a move to 4nm. and the new Armv9 architecture.

If we’re really lucky, we might even be able to find out which upcoming phones will feature a chipset with capabilities like the Xiaomi 12, Samsung Galaxy S22 and OnePlus 10 series – while Motorola has already confirmed plans to use the new chip in the phone this year.

With day two promising mobile computing announcements, it is possible that 8cx Gen 3 is coming soon. This is the next generation of Qualcomm laptop chipsets that will likely be used in both Windows devices and Chromebooks. There will be more hype than usual here as all eyes will turn to see if Qualcomm has an Arm-based laptop chip ready to compete with Apple’s M1 silicon.
