Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 could make a screen protector a lot more useful

According to a knowledgeable display industry analyst, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 could come with a much larger screen protector.

According to Ross Yang of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), the next-generation flip phone will have a display measuring around 3.0 inches. This will allow users to do a lot more without having to open the phone to reveal the 6.7-inch screen.

The current Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 1.9-inch display next to the camera lenses and is only really useful for notifications, shortcuts, and accessing media controls and quick settings. It also works as a camera viewfinder for photos taken with the rear cameras. It’s definitely handy, but it can certainly be more useful.

We would like to have access to more complete versions of apps like Spotify beyond just skipping tracks and pausing music, as is possible with the Moto Razr series flip phones, a key competitor to the Z Flip series. For example, a 3-inch display will be fine for watching YouTube videos or photos that you received in texts.

Yang has been a trusted source in recent years, often reporting on display technologies, sizes, and update rates for upcoming phones and tablets. So while we’ll be careful, there’s also a good chance that this particular feature will be implemented.

The display expert also predicts that Samsung will introduce a different hinge design in the Z Flip 5, which he says will reduce the visibility of the hinge. This would be another welcome change.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is already our favorite small phone, and Samsung’s foldable devices now feel less niche and more affordable. We gave the phone four stars for improved battery life, clever camera tricks, and various customization options.

We would have liked longer battery life and more upgrades than the Galaxy Z Flip 3, as well as a more comfortable display. Looks like the next generation will take care of the last one.
