Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 display just got more useful with CoverScreen OS

Samsung has updated the underlying hardware of its latest Galaxy Z Flip 4. While its design hasn’t been overhauled, it’s been refined to perform better than the previous model. What hasn’t changed at all is the size of the lid display. From our initial impressions, Samsung has improved a few things in terms of functionality, but it still has a long way to go before being as useful as the Moto Razr’s external display since it basically functions as a smartwatch display. Now the developer has come up with an interesting solution that adds more functionality to the 1.9-inch screen protector by adding a launcher and app drawer.

CoverScreen OS as reported XDA Developersdeveloped jagan2, and aims to make the external display of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 more useful. The app requires a lot of permissions, but it worked fine on our Z Flip 4 test device with a few bugs, which is normal considering it’s in beta.

CoverScreen OS is essentially a complete cover launcher. It gives you more options with customizable toggles, the ability to add regular widgets instead of Samsung’s default ones, and an app drawer. The launcher can also launch apps, play movies, and launch games on the screen protector itself without having to open the main display.

The feature that most Galaxy Z Flip 4 owners will get this app for is really the CoverScreen OS notifications, which look a lot more detailed (similar to the regular notifications you see in the notification bar) compared to the truncated notifications that Samsung displays on the cover display along with limited response options. There are also many other features such as side lighting for the cover display. The app also supports a full size keyboard like on [Motorola Razr 2022].

While the app gives you basic features for free, some features are locked behind paywalls. The app is currently offered on a subscription model with a monthly fee of Rs. 160 and annual rupees. 1200. Lifetime subscription of CoverScreen OS for Galaxy Z Flip 4 can be purchased for 2400 rupees. The developer is even promising support for future Flip models starting at Rs. 4000 onwards.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 was announced globally on August 10, and from August 16, the phone began pre-booking in India. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 starts at Rs. 89,999 for the base variant and is also available in a custom Bespoke Edition priced at Rs. 97,999. The phone is equipped with an updated Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and is available with 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. The smartphone is equipped with two 12-megapixel rear cameras and a 10-megapixel selfie camera.
