Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ feature 48-120Hz variable refresh rate display, company says

The South Korean manufacturer has cleared up the confusion over the display refresh rate of the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+. The company told Gadgets 360 in a statement that both Samsung Galaxy S22 displays support refresh rates from 48Hz to 120Hz, although their “patented technology” will help minimize the data transfer rate between the application processor (AP) and the display. up to 10 Hz to save power consumption. So while Samsung originally said the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ would have a 10-120Hz variable refresh rate, it has now updated the original announcement with a 48-120Hz refresh rate.

A Samsung spokesperson responded to Gadgets 360 on the confusion they created by recently updating their site with a new refresh rate.

“While the display of both devices supports between 48Hz and 120Hz, Samsung’s proprietary technology offers an adjustable display refresh rate, at which the data rate from the access point [application processor] for display can be minimized to 10 Hz to save power consumption,” the spokesperson said in a prepared statement.

The spokesperson added that the company has decided to update the public listing of the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ to “meet a more widely accepted industry standard.”

“Consumers can rest assured that hardware specifications have not changed and both devices support up to 120Hz for ultra-smooth scrolling,” the spokesperson said.

Initially, Ross Young, CEO of the analytical company Display Supply Chain Consultants, drew attention to the change in refresh rate.

Samsung has silently updated its marketing materials, including an infographic on its website, to reveal that both phones will feature a 48-120Hz variable refresh rate. Initially, the infographic showed a refresh rate of 10–120 Hz.

Like this year’s phones, the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ technically have the same 48-120Hz variable refresh rate. However, it is not clear at the moment whether the patented technology is exclusive to newer models.

Unlike the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers variable refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz.
