Pixel 7 set to upgrade 4K selfie camera

The Google Pixel 7 may be set to receive a welcome upgrade to its selfie camera, with reports suggesting the addition of 4K video recording.

Google surprised us all when it unveiled a sneak peek at its new line of smartphones at the Google I/O conference in May. However, that hasn’t stopped the continuous stream of leaks and claims regarding the follow-up to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

The latest insight comes from a deep dive into the code for version 8.5 of the Google Camera app. 9to5Google. Code has just been added to the app that controls camera performance for the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and the upcoming Pixel tablet.

There aren’t many changes reported here, which is perhaps unsurprising given reports that the new phones will be very similar to the Pixel 6 lineup in terms of hardware. However, one interesting detail concerns the Pixel 7’s selfie camera.

It looks like both the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 7 will have the ability to shoot 4K video. Currently, only the Pixel 6 Pro has this capability.

That should mean moving from the Pixel 6’s 8MP selfie camera to the Pixel 6 Pro’s 11.1MP selfie camera for Google’s base smartphone.

There’s also an interesting snippet in the Google Camera code regarding the upcoming Pixel tablet, which has been shown to only have a single rear camera. According to the latest data, the Pixel tablet will not be able to shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second and may not support 4K video at all.

Don’t expect the luxury features of Google Audio Zoom, Slow Motion, and Action Pan photography to come over from the Pixel phone lineup.
