Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro disassembly videos show strong heat dissipation and improper millimeter-wave antenna placement

The Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6 phones have been extensively disassembled to reveal their internals and demonstrate their maintainability. The teardown was done by PBK Reviews, and while the internals of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are pretty much the same, there are a few key differences that are highlighted in the videos. The two phones come complete with a heatsink, and the disassembly also reveals the location of the mmWave. The videos focus on two phones being repaired, and the screen and fingerprint sensor worked fine after replacement.

PBK Reviews has posted two videos detailing the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro teardown. When both phones are open, they are both covered with a large copper heatsink. Also at the bottom is an aluminum middle plate for greater heat dissipation, which is connected to the microcircuits using thermal tape. The under-screen fingerprint sensor is also located on the back of the screen. It is a thin sticker that takes up very little space. The proximity sensor and insufficient display brightness are also noticeable under the screen.

The videos show the Pixel 6 Pro has a tactile motor at the bottom of the phone, while the Pixel 6 has a tactile motor at the top. The mmWave antenna is also found to be located at the top edge of the Pixel 6 for regions and carriers that support it. For areas without mmWave, this space is filled with a metal filler block. MmWave is said to provide fast download speeds on 5G phones, but just installing one is questionable. It will most likely be hand-locked in landscape mode, and Qualcomm will even reportedly suggested that the signal would work better if any phone had more than four millimeter antennas built into it. With just one mmWave antenna placed in poor condition, it remains to be seen if the Pixel 6 will ever be able to provide high-speed connections or not.

In terms of maintainability, PBK Reviews reports that the USB Type-C port is soldered to the motherboard, making repairs difficult. The video also shows that everything inside is glued together, which means that the repair will reduce the water resistance of the phones. The video says there were no issues when replacing the screen, but replacing the fingerprint sensor required running some calibration software and then the phone had to be reset to factory settings.
