OnePlus promises 4 years of OxygenOS and 5 years of security updates for future phones

OnePlus has announced a 4-year OxygenOS update for select phones scheduled to launch next year. In addition, the smartphone maker will also offer five years of security updates for these phones. Although the names of the smartphones receiving additional OS updates have not been confirmed, they will most likely apply to its flagships coming in 2023. This is a big promise made by the Android OEM, as many popular smartphone manufacturers offer up to three years of OS updates.

Gary Chen, Head of Software Products Division, said in an official OnePlus community post that the company will provide OxygenOS with four years and five years of security updates. He also stated that OnePlus wants its users to use their devices for longer, and therefore this new update policy will ensure access to the phone’s latest security features and functionality.

“As a user-centric company, we do our best to improve the user experience. As more users keep their devices longer, we want to make sure we can offer this capability. This new update policy will give you access to the latest security and latest features you need to keep OnePlus running fast and smoothly throughout the life of your phone.

This is good news for OnePlus users. For now, the company is offering three major OxygenOS updates and four years of security updates for its expensive phones like the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 10 series. However, less expensive phones like the OnePlus 7, OnePlus Nord, and OnePlus Nord 2 only receive two major OS updates.

OnePlus recently released the OxygenOS 13 update based on Android 13 for its OnePlus 8 series, which includes the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8T. The Android 13-based update rolled out to the OnePlus 10 Pro in September and to the OnePlus 9 lineup in November. The update comes with the company’s Quantum Animation Engine 4.0 with a new behavior recognition feature, real physics movements in animation and optimized fonts, as well as aesthetics, connectivity, personalization, security and privacy, health and digital wellbeing, performance optimizations and updates related to the gaming experience .

Meanwhile, Samsung is offering four years of major Android updates for the Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy A53, Galaxy A33, Galaxy Fold 3, and Galaxy Fold 4 series phones. Having said that, Google is offering three years of OS and five years of security updates for its newly released flagship series. Pixel 7.
