OnePlus North has been a huge success for OnePlus, which has earned the highest sales since the company’s first day, and sells more than a million phones in the UK alone. We’re still waiting for the phone to get a real sequel, but in the meantime, the new Nord CE 5G seems well placed to take (almost) everything that worked on the original and offer it for a little more price.
With a starting price of £ 299 / € 299 – it’s launched in Europe and Asia, but will skip North America – the North CE (which means “Core Edition”, if you ask me) is £ 80 / € 100 cheaper than its predecessor.
Despite that, it still gets a 6.43-inch, 90Hz AMOLED display, a larger 4500 mAh battery, an ever-slightly improved Warp Charge 30T Plus, and a similar set of RAM and storage options as before.
The modified camera’s configuration is perfectly improved as well: a 64Mp main camera, f / 1.8 (from 48Mp at the same aperture last year), paired with an 8Mp ultrawide and a 2Mp mono lens. That third lens won’t be very interesting to anyone, though, because it only helps to slightly improve black-and-white photography; similar to last year’s North, whose depth sensor and macro shooter were equally incessant.
On the front, the dual North 2020 selfie camera has been reduced to a single 16 MP front camera, but that won’t matter much for most. However, the cuts don’t stop there.
The Snapdragon 750G chipset used here may be newer, but it is a lower specification than the 765G used in the original North – although it still supports 5G, as the phone name suggests.
The biggest change for many will be build quality: no more protection from Gorilla Glass, the brand’s OnePlus alert slider is gone, and the back and frame of the phone are now both made of plastic. .
It’s a shame, but there’s a trade-off: the CE 5G is much lighter, at just 170g, and at 7.9mm thick it’s the thinnest OnePlus phone since 2018 OnePlus 6T – despite always squeezing into a helmet grip.
North CE is not the first North to follow the original – even more expensive N10 and N100 also launched last year, while the company also sought the release of a North N200 budget in North America soon, instead of the CE.
U North CE 5G is available in three colors: Void Blue, Carbon Ink, and Ray Ray. It starts at € 299 for 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of memory, £ 299 / € 329 for 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of memory, or £ 369 / € 399 for 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of memory.
Sales in the UK start at 15:25 today, with pre-orders from the OnePlus website only for members of the OnePlus Community until midnight on June 12th. Sell on Amazon UK start again today, with Three accompany the phone from Friday before the phone’s wider release on June 21st. In India the whole sale starts a little earlier, on June 16th.
