Motorola is rumored to be working on a foldable smartphone

Motorola is said to be working on a new foldable smartphone, and it may work a little differently than other foldable prototypes we’ve seen to date.

According to Principal Consultant Evan Blass (via 91mobiles), a Lenovo-owned company, is working on an ambitious new smartphone codenamed “Felix”. This phone will be Motorola’s first foldable smartphone.

Unlike any of the previous foldout concepts we’ve seen from the likes of Oppo, TCL and LG, Motorola’s foldout model will unfold vertically.

Models such as the Oppo X 2021 and LG Rollable expanded horizontally, making them effectively ordinary portrait phones that turned into tablets. Conversely, the Motorola Felix is said to start from an extremely compact form and then expand vertically into a normal-sized phone.

Overall, this is similar to the difference between the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. The former turns a regular phone into a tablet, while the latter shrinks a regular phone into a more compact form factor when not in use. .

The report claims that Felix is in the very early stages of development, to the point where the original software for the flip device needed to be tested on a modified Edge 30 Pro. Motorola doesn’t seem to have a prototype working hardware to refer to.

In other words, don’t expect to see Motorola’s first foldable smartphone in stores in 2022.
