Moto teases phone with 200MP camera and foldable flagship

The rumored Motorola phone with the 200-megapixel camera is likely to arrive in July, according to a teaser posted on social media in recent days.

weibo post (via 9to5Google) from Lenovo China (Motorola’s parent company) promises “a new benchmark in image quality” and says bluntly that a phone with a 200-megapixel sensor will arrive in July.

This is in line with recent rumors of a Moto device codenamed Frontier. If it arrives with a capacious sensor, this implies the use of the Samsung ISOCELL HP1, which the company announced at the end of 2021 and was associated with Moto as recently as last November.

At the time, Samsung promised that the HP1 would be the first sensor of its kind dedicated to mobile devices. The company’s press release states; “Based on Samsung’s most advanced 0.64µm pixels, the ISOCELL HP1 delivers this ultra-high resolution in a small package that fits comfortably in today’s portable devices. With ISOCELL HP1, images contain an amazing amount of detail, which helps the image stay sharp even when cropped or resized.”

Moto teasers 2022

It’s unclear, given the massive overall improvement in smartphone cameras over the past few years, whether the megapixel race actually means a lot to consumers these days. Has it been superseded by an abundance of ultra-wide-angle cameras, optical zoom, telephoto lenses and effective macro modes?

Another post teases (top right) a foldable phone with a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. This could mean that the long-awaited Moto Razr 3 will arrive with true flagship power. The teaser, which clearly involves the flip phone opening up and emitting light upwards, did not provide a potential launch date.
