Jya Fjord Air Purifier Review: Air Care in Style

Fjord is a stylish air purifier. It is made by Jya, part of Smartmi, which is a Xiaomi company. It is painted in metallic gray with chrome trim around the fan grille. The air intakes are round, the touchpad is round, and the rounded corners give it a smoother, more organic feel.

At 53.5 cm tall, the Fjord has no handles and weighs about 14.3 pounds (6.5 kg). This makes it difficult to lift, so Jya put the whole thing on 360-degree wheels, much like the ones on wheeled suitcases.

A black cable with a built-in plug comes out from the bottom of the purifier. Its length is 170 cm, which is typical for this type of cleaner.

Jaya says Fjord removes 99.99% of harmful air pollutants and neutralizes viruses and bacteria in minutes.

It has a four step cleaning process. The first layer is a pre-filter for hair and dust mites. The second layer is a HEPA H13 filter for airborne particles such as dust, pollen, mold spores and bacteria. The third layer is activated carbon to eliminate odors and harmful gases such as tobacco smoke and formaldehyde. To top it all off, there is UV sterilization to kill bacteria and viruses.

The filter itself is a hollow cylindrical block that fits into the purifier body. You remove the top of the purifier to access it, and it’s 4cm thick. At 26cm long and 22cm in diameter, it’s a solid kit that accounts for about 3 pounds of the unit’s total weight. Be careful when replacing the top of the device, it will quickly snap into place and may snag the skin on your finger.

Tune

Inside the box you will find the purifier, power cable and user manual. To set up Fjord initially, just plug it in and turn it on. A beep will sound, the display will light up and the purifier will start working.

The control panel is a touch screen and requires some understanding. When you first turn on Fjord, it will cycle through three displays: PM2.5, PM10 and TVOC.

PM2.5 refers to fine particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter – less than the thickness of a human hair. PM10 is large particles ranging in size from 2.5 micrometers to 10 micrometers. TVOC is the total volatile organic compounds and refers to the entire pool of gaseous air pollutants.

Fjord displays PM 2.5 numbers from 001 to 999 to show you the levels of fine particles in the air. Each of the PM10 and TVOC interfaces is a four-stage bar from excellent to unhealthy: PM10 is a bar of dots and TVOC is a bar of wavy lines.

If you press this main display interface, you can quickly switch to four operating modes: sleep, favorites, power, or auto.

Sleep mode is a very quiet mode. Regardless of the level of air pollution that the Fjord registers, it will continue to operate at low speed. You set your favorite mode through the Smartmi app, determining the coverage area and cleaning efficiency.

Power mode allows you to set the purifier to operate at maximum speed with maximum performance. In automatic mode, the Fjord automatically switches the fan speed depending on the air quality. And if you swipe right on the touchscreen, you’ll see a temperature and humidity display.

A swipe to the left opens up five more display screens: the first shows the operating mode options differently, the second shows the remaining filter life, the third allows you to adjust the screen brightness, the fourth allows you to restore or disable Wi-Fi settings. , and the fifth lets you turn the UV light on and off.

Performance

Jaya states that it takes “8 to 15 minutes for the fjord to clear your living space”.

We first tried the air purifier on high power and were impressed. We could feel the movement of air five feet away and estimated the sound level to be about the same as the sound of a household hair dryer.

We then tried the automatic mode and tested the effects of vaping in a small room. Surprisingly, within eight seconds, the PM2.5 display suddenly went to 74 and turned red, the air purifier turned on the high fan speed, then the indicator began to count down from yellow to 020 on green – a process that took ten to twenty seconds. .

The volume of the sound varies depending on what the purifier thinks is the appropriate fan speed for the level of air pollution.

However, sleep mode was great; the sound was lower than that of a desktop computer. Jya calls this noise level “18.8 dB(A)* Whisper Clean” and we found this to be more than accurate.

Smart Features

Fjord is equipped with smart features and works with Homekit, Google Assistant and Alexa. However, the manual does not provide very clear instructions on how to download the respective application, so a bit of trial and error is required, as well as prior skills and knowledge of smart technologies.

Fjord uses the Smartmi app, which must be downloaded from Apple or Google Play. The QR code in the guide will direct you to the right place.

Once you have installed the app and opened it, it will automatically find the air purifier. In our test, it took less than a minute. It then asked for our WiFi password and started connecting to Fjord.

It took several tries for the app to connect.

Once detected, Fjord appears on the main screen of the Smartmi app and you can turn it on and off from here. Clicking on the purifier image will take you to the next screen, which displays three metrics: PM10, TVOC, and PM2.5, along with the overall status of each.

If you click on the TVOC or PM2.5 icons, you will be taken to the graph view and you can choose which metrics to display per day, week, or month.

The swipe bar below the fjord lets you turn the cleaner on and off and set the mode. There are four modes that you can access from the touch screen on the device, but there is also a manual mode where you can move the slider up and down to select the fan speed for a specific space in m.² – We assume that this setting becomes the “favorite” mode on the Fjord touch screen.

Then from now on you can connect to Apple Homekit, Google Assistant or Alexa.

For those who are less tech-savvy, this process can be too complicated, so you may be relying on the air purifier’s touch screen and not be able to control the device remotely.

Coating

Jya states that Fjord will deal with zones from 31m.² up to 54m². Clean air supply speed 450 m³ per hour, and for the supply of clean air TVOS – 150 m³ hour.

Operating costs

Fjord is a 48W appliance. This is about average for this type of cleaner; power consumption is about the same as a small laptop or Sky Box.

You also need to consider the cost of replacement filters. Jai estimates that they should be changed about every six months. And they are not cheap: $59 in the US or €59 in the UK and Europe.

Price and availability

The Jya Fjord is available in the US from Jya for $369 or on Amazon for $319, but the best current price is at Walmart where it’s $289.

In the UK and Europe, you can only buy it directly from Xiaomi or on the Jya website for €369.

Verdict

Stylish and easy to transport, the Jya Fjord air purifier meets many requirements. The filtration process has four stages and includes UV light, the automatic mode is impressively reactive and you get a lot of information about indoor air quality.

While some people may find it difficult to navigate the purifier’s touch screen and download and use the app, Jya Fjord is a good choice for an air purifier if you know how to set up smart devices and enjoy using them.
