iPhone 14 Pro models will receive support for Always-On Display through iOS 16: Mark Gurman

According to the report, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will receive always-on display support through iOS 16. The new version of iOS, which is expected to debut at WWDC 2022 next week, is said to support always-on lock screen in the future. Apple’s iOS 16 is also reported to have updated Messages, new social media-like features. Along with the new version of iOS, the Cupertino-based company is expected to showcase its updated iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS at the main WWDC event.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg in his Power On newsletter said that iOS 16 will include future support for the always-on lock screen, which will allow the iPhone to dramatically lower frame rates and display “visible information” when the screen is idle — similar to newer Apple Watch models. This support is expected to be enabled exclusively on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple was previously rumored to be offering always-on displays on iPhone 13 Pro models, although the company ultimately did not provide this support.

Gurman also mentioned in his newsletter that iOS 16 will be a pretty “significant update” for iPhone users. It claims to have notification updates as well as new Messages and Health apps.

In the messaging area, Apple is said to be introducing new options for audio messaging.

The new version of iOS is also reported to have major improvements to the lock screen, including wallpaper and widget-like capabilities.

In addition to the update for iPhone users, Apple is expected to improve the iPad software experience by releasing iPadOS 16 at this year’s WWDC. According to Gurman, the new iPadOS will have major changes to windowing and multitasking.

It is also reported that Apple will release a watchOS update with a list of improvements that “affect everyday work and navigation” on the Apple Watch. In addition, the company’s Health app is reported to improve health tracking on both the iPhone and Apple Watch, although the app is unlikely to be extended to iPad and Mac.

Similarly, Apple TV users can expect some updates as Gurman said more smart home apps will be available in the new version of tvOS. Mac users, on the other hand, may want to revisit System Preferences to look similar to the settings available on iOS.

Apple is unlikely to introduce any new iPhone models at WWDC 2022, as it may introduce the iPhone 14 series at another event sometime in September. However, Gurman predicted that the company intended to present its new MacBook Air with M2 chips at a developer conference.

Gurman said he was told by developers that Apple employees are increasingly using next-generation MacBook Air models with their apps. The journalist previously said that along with the new MacBook Air variants, Apple will be working on updates to the high-end Mac mini, the 24-inch Mac, and the new low-cost MacBook Pro.

The WWDC Keynote will take place virtually on June 6th. After the keynote, the developer conference will begin, which will last until June 10th.
