iPhone 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max in 2022: Should You Upgrade?

It’s been quite a while since the new 2022 iPhones were launched in India, but Apple is now struggling to keep up with demand for its iPhone 14 Pro models as its main assembly plant in China has been impacted by Covid-19 restrictions. Apple itself has released an official statement about the delays in the production of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Then the question is, should you wait for the iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, or just grab last year’s iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max? For those with an iPhone 13 Pro Max, does it make sense to upgrade this year? I will try to answer it in this article.
Every year a new iPhone is released and there is usually no need to update your smartphone every time because most updates are usually incremental and this year is no different. The iPhone 14 Pro line looks and feels like last year’s iPhone 13 Pro line, or even the 2020 iPhone 12 Pro line. If you have an iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, it’s hard to tell the difference between them and the 2022 models. but just looking at the back of the phones. The iPhone 13 Pro line and the 14 Pro series are built using very similar materials, are almost the same size, and come in two of the same color options: gold and silver.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max – Display
In terms of display, Apple introduced a 120Hz ProMotion display on the iPhone 13 Pro lineup, and the same technology is being used on the 14 Pro lineup as well; I don’t think you’ll notice much of a difference when it comes to refresh rates whether you’re using the iPhone 14 Pro series or the 13 Pro series. The display of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is very sharp, has a high peak brightness and is protected by a ceramic screen. The only upgrades that the iPhone 14 Pro line offers are higher peak brightness levels of up to 2,000 nits and an Always-On display, which has received mixed reactions from consumers.
Speaking of the notch, the iPhone 13 Pro series has a slightly smaller notch than its predecessor, while the iPhone 14 Pro series uses Dynamic Island, Apple’s method of hiding the gap between the front-facing camera and the FaceID module, both of which are now separate from the display bezel. , thereby resembling an island on the screen. It certainly feels fresh and innovative.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max – cameras
Each year, Apple introduces a new camera feature with additional enhancements to its hardware and software. For the iPhone 13 lineup, they introduced Cinematic Mode and a larger sensor to both the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro series still has some of the best smartphone cameras on the market. The shots come out amazing, the computational photography is vastly improved, the macro photography is one of the best I’ve ever seen, and the recorded video is superb. It can shoot the most beautiful 4K videos at 60fps in DolbyVision HDR, which is still a distant dream for most other premium smartphones. Here are a few samples I took with the iPhone 13 Pro Max over the past year.
As for the iPhone 14 Pro lineup, both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have a larger 48MP main camera, up from the 12MP we’ve seen since the iPhone. 6s. The new phones have a lot of hardware as well as interesting software features. Take, for example, Action Mode, which lets you record some of the best stabilized videos on any smartphone camera today. The iPhone 14 Pro series also uses the new Photonic Engine for more realistic details and colors in photos. Night mode photos look better with higher resolution and take less time to process. Cinematic mode on the 14 Pro series can now record in 4K 30fps, which is very valuable as it’s a plus if you need to trim your video while editing. The front-facing camera on the iPhone 14 Pro lineup now has autofocus to help you capture sharper, more accurate selfies or videos.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max – battery
When I first started using the iPhone 13 Pro Max a year ago, it lasted a day and a half, in line with my typical usage habits, which include heavy social media use, binge browsing, and occasional video recording. But as I age, I’ve noticed that I now need to charge it at the end of the day, as the battery level dropped to 88 percent after about eight months of heavy use. However, this is just my personal experience as others may have different experiences depending on individual usage habits. Apple claims up to 28 hours of battery life with video playback on a single charge on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max claims up to 29 hours of battery life, which isn’t a big upgrade.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max – Processor
The iPhone 13 Pro Max uses the A15 Bionic SoC, which is still very capable and well ahead of its Android counterparts. Games still run well at the highest settings, multitasking is still great, and to date, I haven’t felt any lack of performance.
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max use the A16 Bionic, which has a billion more transistors than the A15 Bionic, higher memory bandwidth, and small overall improvements that result in slightly higher benchmark scores, however, you might not notice a huge performance jump in daily activities.
iPhone 13 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max – price
Now let’s move on to the most important aspect, the price. The iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at Rs. 1,39,900 for the 128GB variant, and for that amount, or even less (depending on discounts), you can get the new 256GB variant of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. It is readily available in all storage options and color options from popular online retailers in India as well as retailers including online 14 Pro Max which has a waiting period. It should be noted that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is officially discontinued this year, so you won’t be able to buy it directly from Apple.com.
Simply put, if you already have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, there’s no point in buying the 14 Pro Max. But if you don’t have the 13 Pro Max and are still using something older like the iPhone 11 Pro and you’re in no rush, get yourself an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max because some of the new features and improvements seem to justify the premium.
