Huawei has unveiled its latest line of flagship smartphones, the Mate 50 series, with impressive screen and camera specs.
Huawei marked the tenth anniversary of its first Mate smartphones with a couple of new additions to the lineup: Huawei Mate 50 and Huawei Mate 50 Pro.
Following the launch, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, said: “Over the past decade, the Mate series has continuously pushed the boundaries to make groundbreaking innovations widely available. Each new generation of Mate smartphones integrates a range of advanced Huawei technologies. The Huawei Mate 50 series continues this proud legacy by delivering groundbreaking innovation and a breath of fresh air.”
The key new specification for these new devices is the new XMAGE camera, which offers a 10x adjustable aperture (from f/1.4 to f/4.0). In auto mode, the aperture changes according to the specific scene and shooting scenario, but in pro mode, you can manually adjust the depth of field and amount of blur from the camera. In addition, the periscope camera supports a zoom range of up to 200x.
The design has also undergone a significant change, with the Space Ring camera module given an elegant Clous de Paris step embossing. The glass version is available in silver or black, while the vegan leather version is also available in orange. Kunlun Glass is actually made up of 10 quadrillion-level nanocrystals, and SGS has given it five stars for drop resistance, while the phones also have an IP68 waterproof rating.
These latest devices from Huawei running on EMUI 13 will not have Google Mobile Services as all of the brand’s devices have since been banned by the United States. However, this UI will offer some welcome new features including SuperStorage, which removes duplicate files and compresses rarely used apps to save more space; and SuperHub, which allows users to temporarily store and share images, documents, and text in packages that are easily transferred between apps and devices. There’s also privacy protection on board, so the device automatically removes sensitive information from images shared, including location and time.
Huawei Mate 50 Pro will be available in two flavors; the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage version is priced at €1,299 (~£1,170), while the 8GB RAM and 512GB storage version is €1,399 (~£1,260).
