Instagram has launched a new security feature to help people keep their accounts safe. and safe from hackers.

Instagram showed a new security check a feature to help users keep their accounts safe in July. This is how it works and why you should use it.

Now, when a user logs into their account, they will see a popup if Instagram thinks their account has been hacked, which gives people the opportunity to go through security checks and check the activity on their account.

Users can now also enable two-factor authentication on their Instagram, either through Whatsapp if you’re using it, or through your phone number, or through authentication apps like Duo Mobile or Google Authentication.

For those wondering how to use this new security check feature and how to set it up for your account, keep reading to find out.

There are several ways to enable two-factor authentication. In the coming weeks, if you use Whatsapp, you will be able to protect your account using your WhatsApp number in some countries.

Currently, you can use your mobile number or authentication apps to set up two-factor authentication.

  1. You will need to open the Instagram app and click on your profile picture in the bottom right corner to go to your profile.
  2. Click on the three lines in the upper right side of the screen.
  3. Click “Settings”.
  4. In Settings, click Security.
  5. Then click on “Two-Factor Authentication”.
  6. Once there, click the Get Started button at the bottom to start setting up two-factor authentication.
  7. At this stage, you will be offered two ways to enable your authentication, click on the “Text message” option.
  8. For Text, Instagram will ask you for a phone number if your account is not associated with it. After entering the phone number, click Next.
  9. Click Finish and your account should have two-factor authentication set up with your phone number.
  10. After that, you should receive the confirmation shown below.

If you don’t want to use your mobile number to set up two-factor authentication, you can also use a third-party app to secure your account.

You can also enable both of these options if you want to provide additional security for your account.

  7. At this stage, you will be offered two ways to enable your authentication, click on the Authentication app option.
  8. If you don’t have the app yet, you will be prompted to download an authentication app. Instagram recommends Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator.
  9. Click Get Started and follow the instructions on the screen.
  10. You will need to enter a verification code from a third-party authentication app to complete the process.
This is what will be displayed on your screen when you set up two-factor authentication with a third-party app.

Once the authentication process is complete, the app will present the user with five backup codes that can be used to return to your account if you lose your phone or cannot get the code in a text message or through authentication apps. You should save these codes and keep them in a safe place so that you can access your account.

Each of the codes can only be used once, but you can request new codes if you are worried that any of them have been stolen or are running out.

Instagram has also advised on other ways to keep your account secure, including making sure your email and phone numbers associated with your account are up to date and available in case Instagram needs to contact you.

Instagram has also stated that it will never send you a DM and that you should never send your personal information to anyone via a DM in the app.

If Instagram wants to contact you, this will only be done through the Instagram Emails tab in your settings.

You can now also enable login prompts, as when you set up two-factor authentication in the app, you will receive a warning whenever someone tries to log into your account from a device that Instagram doesn’t recognize.

You can approve or deny these requests right away from your already signed-in devices, as Instagram will tell you when a person tried to sign in, on which device, and where.

As always, we also recommend that privacy-conscious users read the app’s terms of use and consider installing a mobile antivirus or VPN. You can see a selection of the best VPNs we’ve tested in the previous link.
