How to Set Different Focus Modes on iPhone

Here’s how you can set up different focus modes on your iPhone in just a few steps.
The iPhone is full of useful features, but Apple has stepped up its game by introducing focus modes in iOS 15.
Focus modes make it easy to focus on different tasks. Apple includes modes designed for sleep, work, and personal use, with the ability to customize and create your own focus modes.

iPhone running iOS 15 or later

- Click on Focus
- Click on the focus you want to change
- Click on the “People & Apps” section.
- Choose which contacts you want to add
- Scroll down and add location
- Return to the main screen and click on the “Add” icon.
- Click Custom
- Choose a name and icon
- Click Next
- Click Adjust Focus.
- Choose who you want to allow
- Click Next
- Choose who you want to allow

- Choose which apps you want to allow

Unlock your device and tap on the Settings app.

Scroll down and click Focus.

3Click on the focus you want to change
From the options presented, select the one you want to edit. We chose Work, which has features that may not be available in every Focus, but you can copy these steps into any of the Focus options.

fourClick on the “People & Apps” section.
Click the People & Apps section to choose which apps and people can contact you in Focus mode.

5You can select specific people who can contact you while you are in this focus, and certain people who cannot contact you while you are in this mode. You can also toggle access to apps to notify you in this mode.

6In Work Focus, you can add a location that will include your Focus. We recommend that you select your work address so that it will be included when you arrive. This feature is not available for all focus modes.

7Return to the main screen and click on the “Add” icon.
After you’ve finished setting up focus modes, return to the main screen and tap the Plus icon in the top right corner.

Click the Custom button to add a new focus mode. You can use one of the focus modes below if you like.

9Choose a name and icon
You will need to name the new focus mode and add an icon and color.

When you’re done, click Next.

Click the Adjust Focus button to continue.

Choose who you can or can’t contact you in this new focus mode.

Once you have reviewed your contacts and selected who can and cannot text or call you in focus mode, tap Next.

Select the category of callers who are allowed to contact you in focus mode.

If you are happy with your choice, click Next.

16Choose which apps you want to allow
From the list of apps presented, choose which apps are allowed to contact you while you’re in Focus. You can add more apps, and you can also prevent certain apps from contacting you in focus mode.

When you’ve set up your new focus mode and are happy with it, click Done. You can always go back and toggle access to contacts and apps while you’re in focus mode, both for your custom focus modes and those already set up by Apple.
Troubleshooting
Your iPhone can have up to ten different focus modes, each of which can be switched and adjusted in the ways described above.
