Google Pixel 6a fingerprint scanner has a security bug

The Google Pixel 6a was recently launched in India and is priced at Rs. 43,999 and will go on sale July 28. Ahead of its first sale, the Google Pixel 6a seems to be running into some issues with its fingerprint scanner. Apparently, Google Pixel 6a allows you to unlock the device using unregistered fingerprints. It is currently unknown if this is a software bug or a hardware failure.

The in-display fingerprint scanner of the Google Pixel 6a appears to have a security vulnerability that allows even unregistered fingerprints to be authenticated to unlock the smartphone. Noticed this problem Beebom and later confirmed by a technical YouTuber Giki Ranjit and 91 Mobiles. We also found the same issue on our Google Pixel 6a review unit. Our device could be unlocked with the thumb of the left hand, although it was never registered to the Pixel 6a. However, it did not unlock when a third person tried to unlock the phone with their fingerprint. Gadgets 360 has contacted Google regarding this matter and is awaiting a response.

After re-enrolling my fingerprint, the device worked properly, allowing the smartphone to be unlocked using only the enrolled fingerprints. It did not allow my left thumb to unlock the smartphone, but sometimes displayed the message “Partial fingerprint detected” at the bottom of the screen. It is unknown if this issue is caused by the fingerprint scanning software or hardware. It’s worth noting that the Pixel 6a hasn’t received any software updates since launch, and our device is still running the April 2022 Android security patch.

The Pixel 6a is the latest Google smartphone in India to feature the Google Tensor chip. It packs a dual camera on the back and a 4410mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The Pixel 6a is guaranteed to receive three years of Android security updates and five years of Android security updates.
