Best phones of 2022: from iPhone 14 Pro to Galaxy Z Flip 4

This year we have seen some notable smartphones from well-known manufacturers, from the iPhone 14 Pro to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Unique smartphones like the Nothing Phone 1 have also debuted, and foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 have seen improvements over their predecessors. Companies such as Xiaomi and Vivo also released powerful flagship smartphones this year, giving consumers even more options to choose from.

On this week’s edition of the Gadgets 360 Orbital podcast, host Ahil Arora talks with review editor Roydon Serejo and senior reviewer Sheldon Pinto to list some of the best smartphones you can buy in 2022.

Despite an ongoing supply chain issue that has impacted smartphone availability, we have seen several new phones from brands such as Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi, as well as new upstart Nothing. This year, Apple launched the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series, which compete with the Samsung Galaxy S22 series and the Google Pixel 7 line. It’s also worth noting that these three phones run on different chipsets.

Sheldon says the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are great phones with great camera performance and software. We liked that the Pixel 7 offers better battery life than the Pixel 7 Pro despite having a smaller battery, and is arguably the best Pixel phone you can buy today.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are two of the best iPhones you can buy today, but we think the price is too high in India. This year, Apple added new features such as Dynamic Island and a new 48MP camera with new zoom capabilities. Sheldon also compared the iPhone 14 Pro to the Pixel 7 Pro, comparing the camera performance of those phones.

Xiaomi also launched its flagship smartphone Xiaomi 12 Pro in India this year. The top-notch phone from the Chinese smartphone maker in India is powered by a powerful Snapdragon chipset, four speakers, and represents a new direction for Xiaomi, according to Sheldon. Picture quality was solid while the phone featured a minimalist, subdued design, and we reviewed it positively.

The OnePlus 10 Pro, released at the beginning of the year, is one of the best phones the company has released in 2022. Roydon says it could be better than the OnePlus 10T, which debuted later this year without a warning slider. He adds that aside from a few weird phone camera options, it’s also an improvement over the OnePlus 9 Pro, the company’s flagship phone from last year.

Next, we’ll discuss the Samsung Galaxy Flip 4, a phone that has gone from a very niche product to a more useful one. Sheldon says the battery life and heat issues in its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, have been resolved and it’s also much easier to use while gaming. It is also the most affordable foldable phone you can buy in India. We’ll also discuss why the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 didn’t make our list of this year’s best phones.

Sheldon recently reviewed the Asus ROG Phone 6, which launched back in July and went on sale in India at the end of November. He says that you should buy the phone along with its accessories and peripherals, and you will probably use it as a secondary phone like the Nintendo Switch.

Nothing Phone 1 was the first phone released by a British company led by Carl Pei. The phone has a transparent back with LEDs that light up when you receive a message or when the phone rings. While Roydon says back lighting might be a useless feature, you get wireless charging support and an IP rating for dust and water resistance on a mid-range smartphone.

Earlier this year, Samsung launched its 2022 flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, in India. Roydon says it’s a complete package, a versatile phone. Sheldon agrees, saying it’s a serious device that competes with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and also offers S Pen support. Given Samsung’s commitment to software, if he had to pick one phone from our list, Roydon said it would probably be the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Should you buy any of these phones? The end of the year is perhaps the worst time to buy a new smartphone. We expect to see new phones from Samsung and OnePlus by February or March. Prices for smartphones released in 2022 may drop when these new phones arrive, so it might be worth holding onto your current phone for a while.
