Asus unveils ROG Phone 5S and 5S Pro

A Chinese retailer jumped past the gun last week. listing of unannounced update to Asus ROG 5 phone on his website in stock for ordering. Now Asus has officially confirmed the specs and there are two new phones coming: the ROG Phone 5S and the ROG Phone 5S Pro.

As previously reported, the major upgrade is the move to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset over the original 888 – a small but highly anticipated upgrade that helps it stand out from the crowd. After all, even Samsung’s latest foldable flagships don’t have the 888 Plus version.

In addition, the original’s 300Hz sensor sampling has now been bumped up to 360Hz, which could provide a marginal benefit for avid gamers who are, after all, the primary target of a gaming smartphone.

These changes apply to both models, so what makes the Pro Pro version? Well, the phone seems to be a replacement for past ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate releases. This means you get more RAM internally, as well as two additional touchpads on the back and a small strip of color display on the back for ROG Vision, which can display notifications and images.

Otherwise, everything looks the same, which is not bad considering how much we liked the original phone. “If you can crack its size and style and want a fantastic portable media player and gaming device, you’ll have a hard time finding more for less money,” Basil Cronfly wrote in his review of the Asus ROG Phone 5.

At the moment, only Taiwan market pricing has been announced, and global availability has yet to be announced. There the phone will cost from 29,990 TWD (about £ 780) for a regular phone or 37,990 TWD (about £ 990) for the Pro version.
