Apple is rethinking iPhone 15 Plus production after major iPhone 14 Plus failure

Apple is reportedly considering re-evaluating the production of the iPhone 15 Plus and adding something else to the line, largely due to the complete failure of the iPhone 14 Plus. The iPhone 14 series was launched in September and includes the iPhone 14, 14 Pro, 14 Plus, and 14 Pro Max, and while demand for the iPhone 14 Pro models has surpassed all expectations, the non-professional vanilla iPhone 14 models have fared worse.

Apple was forced to revise its iPhone lineup for 2023 as Apple was having difficulty porting iPhone 14 Plus devices. The apparent lack of demand for the new model is so obvious that Apple has already stopped production just two weeks after the device was launched.

Apple is also considering changing its pricing strategy for its future iPhone models and could potentially adjust prices differently than in the past. There is speculation that the company may lower the price of the Plus model in the 2023 lineup. The iPhone 14 Plus currently starts at $800, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $999.

Apple cut production of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus last month due to poor sales. foxconn instead, it was said to focus on the iPhone 14 Pro series.

The iPhone 14 Plus didn’t go on sale until October 7th, but pre-orders for the $900 model were open for most of September. Last month, Apple prioritized shipments of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. iPhone 14 Plus is a new price segment of the flagship iPhone line, which replaced $200 off iPhone 13 mini, which was also lagging behind. Sales of the iPhone 12 mini were reportedly so lackluster that Apple switched to selling the larger model long before the iPhone 14 Plus was announced.

The Information reports that Apple appears to be less confident about customer demand for the larger-screen iPhone 14. Supply chain sources tell Wayne Ma that Apple has asked for at least one assembler “immediately stop [iPhone 14 Plus] production.” Meanwhile, Ma reports that two Apple suppliers “who rely on parts and assemble them into larger modules” are cutting production by 70% and 90%.

Possible factors influencing this include rising costs of daily living due to inflation and a weaker-than-average global economy across a range of factors. Apple is also positioning the iPhone 14 Plus at a logical but tough price point; The iPhone 14 costs $799 and has a fairly large display. The $899 iPhone 14 Plus has an even larger display, but there are no other differences. This compares to the $999 and $1,099 iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, respectively, which feature improved camera systems and redesigned sensor layout.

Despite early signs of weak demand, The Information reports that Apple intends to release a variant of the iPhone 15 Plus next fall. Early reviewers preferred the longer battery life of the Plus model, which costs $200 below the similarly sized Max model.

According to the information, it became known that Apple has already ordered some suppliers to stop producing components for the iPhone 14 Plus. Citing sources in the supply chain, the website claims that production will not resume until Apple assesses demand. The general consensus is that some vendors are producing 70-90% fewer iPhone 14 Plus than Apple originally predicted. However, Apple is allegedly committed to introducing the iPhone 15 Plus next year along with the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

On the one hand, the iPhone 14 Plus offers few advantages over the iPhone 14, but is worth 100 USD more than its smaller counterpart. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Plus is significantly less functional than the Pro Max, but only costs $200. While the price gap between iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max is larger than between iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14, adding from 200 to 899 USD gives you a superior display, new chipset and improved rear cameras.
