Another important Samsung Galaxy S23 spec confirmed

Despite all the talk about potential improvements to the Samsung Galaxy S23’s camera, one of the biggest improvements could be the new display glass.

Corning today confirmed that its new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 technology will be featured in the Samsung Galaxy 23 series, which will be announced at Unpacked on February 1st. The current Galaxy S22 series is currently equipped with Victus+ technology.

While the durability of display glass has improved a lot in recent years – thanks in large part to Gorilla Glass – second-generation Victus technology aims to finally break your phone’s Achilles’ heel…concrete. Testing of the technology has shown much greater resistance to drops on surfaces that mimic concrete or asphalt compared to competing products.

“In lab testing, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 withstood a drop of up to one meter onto a concrete-like surface,” Corning said in a statement late November 2022.

“Competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers usually failed when dropped from half a meter or less. In addition, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 continued to withstand drops of up to two meters onto an asphalt-like surface and was four times more scratch resistant than competing aluminosilicate.”

Part of the problem for Corning has been the increase in the average size and weight of smartphones over the past few years. The company said screen sizes are 10% larger and phones are 15% heavier than they were four years ago. This alone increases the likelihood of damage to the display when dropped. However, the achievements of the Victus 2 have largely negated this.

“Consumers today expect smartphone displays to be protected from damage,” said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager of Gorilla Glass. Press release. “For more than a decade, Gorilla Glass has served the needs of smartphone users by setting the standard for durable coating materials. We are proud to continue our long partnership with Samsung and our latest innovations play a vital role in the latest Samsung Galaxy smartphones.”
