Alleged Google Pixel 7 Prototype Shows Up On eBay Months Before Official Debut

A purported Pixel 7 prototype has surfaced on eBay – just a few weeks after Google officially unveiled the phone at its keynote earlier this month. While the availability of the Pixel 7 is slated for later this year, the retailer was able to list a purported prototype for sale. The prototype appeared with a distinctive design that appeared in a key note, with a unique camera panel on the back. It appears to have the deep Obsidian black tint that Google showed off during the premiere of the Pixel 7. Also, it has been revealed that Google is working on a new high-end Pixel phone that could be different from the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro and have a superior display.

As spotted by Android commentator Mishaal Rahman, the alleged Pixel 7 prototype was put up for sale seller on eBay. The phone appears to have the same design language that Google showed off at I/O 2022.

Listing of a prototype that was closed at the time of this article’s submission, but was available through its cached versionincluded some additional images of the phone to show the sides, front and back of the phone in detail.

Overall, the design of the prototype is very similar to the Pixel 7 that Google unveiled earlier this month. One of the images also indicates that the phone, which turned out to be in working order, has 128 GB of internal memory. This suggests that the Pixel 7 may arrive in a 128GB model.

The image that appears in the list shows that the phone has the model number GVU6C. A glimpse of the Pixel 7 Pro – an improved variant in the Pixel 7 series – was also allegedly seen in one of the images, where a reflection of what appears to be the phone’s camera panel appeared on the back of the prototype.

There is no exact information about how the seller was able to get the prototype. However, in a conversation with The Verge, the seller argued that they bought the phone from a wholesaler.

The seller listed the phone for sale on eBay with a starting price of $450 (roughly Rs. 34,900). However, the listing was closed shortly after it became known to the public.

Notably, this is not the first time a Pixel device has appeared in detail online prior to its official availability. In fact, the Pixel family has a long history of leaks and rumors.

Google, however, this time tried to dispel the rumors by introducing the Pixel 7 series long before the official launch, which is scheduled for the end of this year – most likely in October. However, the eBay listing suggests the company still needs to work on tightening supply controls to limit the early arrivals of its future devices.

In addition to the alleged Pixel 7 prototype, Google has been revealed to be developing a new high-end Pixel phone. As informed by 9to5Google, the new device is codenamed G10 and its links have been spotted in Android kernel code. It should have a top-notch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The mysterious Pixel phone’s display has been revealed to be made from Chinese BOE and has specs such as QHD+ resolution (1440×3120 pixels), which matches that of the Pixel 6 Pro. In addition, the screen size is 71x155mm.

The screen resolution and size of the new Pixel device suggests it will be a phone rather than a tablet or other device.

But still, there are no official details about the existence of the claimed high-end Pixel phone. It could just be a prototype for internal testing, or it could finally debut after the launch of the Pixel 7 series.
