WNBA star trolls college coach for calling her ‘worst rebounder’
- Tina Charles finished second on the WNBA’s list of rebounds.
- Reflecting on this feat, the Washington Mystics star poked fun at her college coach at UConn.
- “It’s just about Coach Auremma, who always told me that I was the worst rebounding ball,” Charles said.
Tina Charles has long been one of the greatest female athletes in the WNBA, and now she is confidently entering the league record book.
Washington Mystics superstar recently overtook former Lynx legend Rebecca Brunson to finish second on the WNBA’s list of rebounds. Now, after losing a whopping 16 boards against Atlanta Dream, Charles is just over 300 rebounds behind Sylvia Fowles and is in first place.
It’s a big achievement for the eight-time WNBA All-Star athlete, who admitted she was motivated by skeptics about her rebounding ability, namely her former college coach, Geno Auremma.
“It’s just about Coach Auremma, who always told me I was the worst bouncer,” Charles said after the game. “It’s more for him.”
Auremma is considered one of the greatest basketball minds in the game, but he was wrong with that assessment. Charles not only achieved professional success on glass, but also ended his career as the undisputed leader in husky picking.
Even with superstars like Maya Moore, Brianna Stewart, and Nafisa Collier coming to Auremma’s team after her and absolutely dominating the NCAA, Charles remains at the top of the Huskies career tips list with 1,367 rebounds in four seasons at the Storrs.
However, Charles is surprisingly humble in all of this.
“As a stance player, this is your job,” Charles said after showing her 16 bounces against Dream. Then she chuckled and added, “Most of the offensive rebounds today came from missing shots and getting them back.”
