Understanding the results of a home pregnancy can be surprisingly complicated at times. A pregnancy test measured in the presence of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, which is produced by an embryo. Although not as accurate as a pregnancy test at the doctors, a home pregnancy test can measure hCG levels with an accuracy of 97 to 99 percent.
Pregnancy tests with blue or pink tincture typically show one line if the result is negative and two if hCG is detected, meaning that the result is positive. If you have any kind of second line, even a weak one, you are pregnant, she says Jennifer Lincoln, MD, obstetrician in Oregon. “A line is a line, whether weak or dark. Every line means pregnant,” she says.
Here’s what to do if you have a weak line in the home pregnancy test according to an expert.
What does a very weak second line mean on a pregnancy test?
If you do a pregnancy test and a second weak color line appears, it usually means you are pregnant. Here’s why you can get a weak line:
It is early in your pregnancy. If you do a pregnancy test on the days immediately before or after a missed period, the test will detect only small amounts of hCG, which may present as a weak line. Most pregnancy tests on the market only work if you take them a week or more after you have missed your period, she says. Cara Delaney, MD, a gynecologist and instructor at the Boston University School of Medicine.
You have a chemical pregnancy. A
it is a type of miscarriage that occurs very early in pregnancy. It can cause a false positive result or a weak line in a pregnancy test because short pregnancy produces a small amount of hCG in your body.
You made a mistake in the test. “If you wait too long to read the test, it can dry out and leave a line that can be misinterpreted as a positive test,” Lincoln says. Most pregnancy tests include instructions to read the results about three to five minutes after the test.
How long after a positive weakness should I try again?
Lincoln says that if you have a weak line in your test and it concerns you, try again in the coming days. “It’s most accurate to wait until the day you have to wait for your period to come, but with the sensitivity of our tests it’s OK to start trying a few days earlier.”
If a home pregnancy test is positive, “most people don’t need a blood pregnancy test to confirm that they are pregnant. And in fact, our[doctors’] Urine tests are exactly the same as the ones you can buy yourself, so there’s no need to come for those, ”Lincoln says.
There are several circumstances where a blood test may be necessary: “If your health care provider is concerned about a
or miscarriage, or if you are undergoing fertility treatments, a blood test may be recommended, but other than that they are not generally necessary. ”
