Before there were pharmaceuticals, medicinal herbs were widely used to treat diseases and maintain health. And tinctures were a common form of these herbal medicines at the time.

In fact, they are “one of the oldest preparations of medicine known to man,” he says Jeff Chen, MD, Founder of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative is co-founder and CEO of Root Science.

Today, cannabis tinctures are a popular method for consuming marijuana products – Whether for medicinal purposes such as pain relief or just looking for a quick stop.

Depending on your goals, you can look for a CBD tincture or a THC tincture. However, how you take it (and how you do it) can have an effect on how you feel.

What is a tincture?

The tinctures are Liquid and highly concentrated herbal extracts known made by soaking herbs in alcohol, vegetable glycerin, or oil.

They are easy to produce and have a long shelf life, making them a practical option for cannabis use, especially for people who want to use marijuana but are not interested in smoking.

Foods and tinctures are both ingested orally, which means they travel through the body and pass through the liver before reaching the bloodstream, causing a delayed onset of effects, usually about 30 minutes to an hour. However, if you place a tincture under the tongue, it will pass through the liver and be absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

“In contrast, when you inhale cannabis products, it enters your lungs and enters directly into the bloodstream and the effects are immediate,” says Chen.

The tinctures are measured with droplets. This allows you the freedom to slowly build up and customize your dose, from 2.5 mg to 10 mg to 20 mg and so on, depending on your needs.

There are several types of dyes:

  • Industrial hemp dyes are made with a high concentration of cannabidiol (alias CBD). They contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (aka THC) so are unlikely to give the feeling of being “high”. These are legally federal.
  • Marijuana tinctures they contain more than o.3% THC, to the point of providing psychoactive effects. These are legal in some states, but not all.

“Depending on how many of the main ingredients are present, the stronger the food or tincture,” he says Jordan Talley, MD, Chief Medical Advisor at Spero CBD.

How to make a tincture

Before you make a dye, familiarize yourself with the law. Industrial cannabis is legal in the United States, but marijuana is illegal federally and can be be used only in certain states. Check your local laws before getting marijuana and use it at your discretion.

To make a dye you need:

  • An herb grinder
  • An oven
  • Marijuana or hemp flower
  • Food grade alcohol (ethanol)
  • A filter
  • A jar with a tight lid
  • A medicine dropper

How to use the dye

Cannabis tinctures are dosed with a dropper and can be taken sublingually (absorbed under the tongue) or mixed into food or drink.

“Your absorption of cannabinoids will be different if you ingest the tincture alone than mixed in food,” says Chen. “In general, you’ll absorb more cannabinoids if you add them to your diet, or if you’ve eaten them recently.”

Because there are no established guidelines for cannabis dosing, Chen says to consult with your doctor and start with a low dose. The Canadian medical cannabis company Tilray recommends starting with a Dose 2.5mg and then slowly increasing until you feel the desired effect. If you start to hear it uncomfortable effects such as paranoia, you may have taken too much and should use a lower dose ahead of time.

Research suggests that cannabis tinctures can help with a variety of medical conditions, depending on whether it is a CBD or THC tincture:
