Trinity Health to buy healthcare partner MercyOne

Trinity Health said Tuesday it has acquired the remaining shares in one of Iowa’s largest healthcare systems, MercyOne.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Trinity created MercyOne in 1998 as a joint venture with Colorado’s Catholic Health Initiatives. In 2019, Catholic Health Initiatives merged with Dignity Health in Chicago to become CommonSpirit.

MercyOne operates 16 hospitals and over 420 healthcare facilities with over 20,000 employees.

With a new sole parent company, MercyOne will move to the Trinity electronic health record system, the company said in a press release.

“We strongly believe that this transition to being a full member of the Trinity Health family will lead to a stronger and more cohesive healthcare system that can offer a convenient and personalized experience for everyone we serve,” said Bob Ritz, president and CEO of the company. We are grateful to CommonSpirit for over 20 years of partnership.”

Trinity and CommonSpirit are currently planning an integration and the deal is expected to close over the summer.

Trinity is one of the largest non-profit Catholic health care systems in the nation, with 115,000 employees at 88 hospitals in 25 states, including eight in Michigan.

In 2021, the company’s revenue was $20.2 billion.

The health care system announced last week that it plans to rebrand all of its operations in Michigan as Trinity Health Michigan.

The name change includes the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in metro Detroit and Mercy Health on the state’s west side, as well as IHA medical groups and Mercy Health Physician Partners. 22 nursing communities and other Trinity organizations will also change their names, the health system said in a press release.

Trinity Health Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Trinity Heath Muskegon have already changed their signage to the new name, and the rest of the hospitals will change names over the next eight months.

Chelsea Hospital, a joint venture between Trinity and Michigan Medicine, will bear the logos of both JV partners.
