If you are one of 12% of Americans who use marijuana, there may come a time when you want to take a break. Maybe you need to take a drug test for a new job, or maybe you just want to clear your head of the high. Whatever the reason, you are heading towards weed detoxification.

What is Weed Detox?

Drug tests are designed to detect metabolites or the byproducts of THC, a compound in marijuana that makes you feel high.

It is important to note that there is most likely no way to speed up the detox period, including drinking water, sweating in the sauna, and drinking detox teas or other herbal teas.

“Many people were convinced that using niacin, Certo, vinegar, detox teas, cranberry juice, bleach, and herbal medications could quickly flush cannabis or THC out of the body,” Smith says. “It is impossible and completely unreliable.”

In addition, lab technicians are trained to detect urinary inconsistencies caused by these products, Smith said.


“Lack of the proper color, temperature, pH, uric acid and creatinine levels can make the test inconclusive and you might find yourself doing another urinalysis or worse, a more accurate test that you can’t shake.” Smith.

Because THC is stored in fat, Smith said, activities that break down or reduce body fat, such as exercise or fasting, could theoretically speed up the process. But research shows that trying to “sweat” can have unintended consequences and even increase your chances of failing the test.

For example, in a small 2013 studyregular cannabis users were asked to refrain from using marijuana for 24 hours before completing 35 minutes of intense exercise. The researchers found that the participants’ blood THC levels, which were measured before and after training, rose sharply immediately after training.

Quitting marijuana

If you use marijuana regularly, quitting can cause several unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, including:
