If you’re curious to try a high-fat, low-carb diet
, but you don’t want to spend time following every bite you eat, there is a more casual approach.
The “lazy keto” diet is defined as keeping carbohydrates below about 10% of daily calories, or about 20 grams of net carbohydrates per day.
You should not follow specific ratios of other macronutrients, such as 70% daily calories from fat and 25% from protein, as you do with strict ketosis.
Experts say this approach may be convenient, but it does not have the same benefits as a more thoughtful keto diet.
Lazy keto vs. keto
An example of a lazy keto diet is sticking to high fat and low carb foods like cheeseburger minus the bun, bacon, steak and avoiding eggs. fruits, potatoes, legumes and grains.
Keto, on the other hand, is more concerned with food quality, and includes low-carbohydrate legumes as well as some fruits such as berries.
Lazy Keto may be easier to maintain for some people than a tight track
The advantage of lazy ketone is that it is less restrictive and time consuming, which can make it easier to attack.
Traditional ketone often requires you to track everything you eat (at least initially), and to stick to an extremely low carb limit. This helps maintain ketosis, a metabolic state in which the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. However, it can be difficult to sustain in the long run.
Lazy keto may be an easier way for some people to achieve their health goals, according to keto guides such as Diet Doctor, simply cutting out foods that are easy to eat too much, such as pastries and fries.
The benefits are less certain
The disadvantage of lazy keto is that, without tracking it consistently, it can be difficult to know if you have the benefit of the keto diet. Small amounts of carbohydrates can add up quickly, according to Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, a professor at the University of West Virginia School of Medicine who studies low-carb diets.
“If people stick to a list of foods that are naturally low in carbohydrates, they don’t need to count,” he told the Insider. “If you include foods like fruit, I’m going to encourage people to be careful.”
Some experts argue that the modified keto is an inappropriate name.
“For you to be in the ketosis grade for keto, you have to be very low in carbohydrates, low in protein, super, super high in fat, and everything that isn’t keto. So you can’t have a modified keto,” he said. Kathie Beals, a registered dietitian and associate professor at the University of Utah, he told Insider earlier.
Lazy ketones may lack nutritious healthy foods
Lazy keto is often combined with another strategy called keto keto bruttu (terms are also used sometimes interchangeably). This is a diet that follows a low ratio of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, but allows people to eat any food that fits these parameters, including fast food. It also encourages food-friendly sweeping meals.
Cutting out carbs without proper planning could also leave you deficient in vitamins and minerals found in products and whole grains.
If you’re going to cut back on carbs, most experts recommend one well-formulated keto diet, with high-quality fats from sources such as fish, nuts, avocados, and low-carb vegetables such as leaves.
“Getting a bun out of a McDonald’s burger is better than eating it with the bun, but it’s not optimal,” Cucuzzella said. “If you eat a homemade cheeseburger, with a colorful plate of starch-free veggies, it’s a diet to live for the rest of your life.”
