A new trend is taking over TikTok, where people are consuming frozen corn syrup. But like many other food-related TikTok trends, this one may not be the healthiest.
In viral videos that began to surface towards the end of July, the creator poured water from a plastic bottle and filled it with corn syrup. They then store the bottle in the freezer for several hours, giving the syrup a gelatinous consistency that a person can squeeze into their mouth.
Many people who consume frozen corn syrup have used pink, blue, or other bright food coloring to make the syrup look more appetizing. When it comes out of the bottle, it looks like a sparkling pillar of color.
Creators like @alanaskylerr, who has 400,000 followers on TikTok and became one of the most popular videos those associated with the trend say the chilled syrup is delicious.
Some of the creators have added their own riffs to this trend, such as mixing in Hi-C, Kool-Aid, or Starburst beverage bags to add flavor to the frozen syrup. Others threw candy and spray at the Nerds.
The most popular videos related to this trend have amassed hundreds of thousands of views, and the hashtag #frozencornsyrup, most used in corn syrup videos, has over 17 million views.
Eating too much corn syrup can lead to health problems
According to CookingLight, the regular corn syrup that most TikTokers on this trend seem to use is not nearly as harmful as high fructose corn syrup, which uses fructose instead of glucose, and is much sweeter than table sugar. However, the site notes that both forms of syrup are refined sugar and should not be consumed in excess.
Amy Shapiro, a registered dietitian and nutritionist based in New York City, told Insider that consuming large amounts of corn syrup is harmful “from a nutritionist’s point of view.”
“Drinking a small amount of corn syrup, like a tablespoon, is not harmful,” she said. “However, the amount that is squeezed out of [water] the bottle is much larger than 1 tablespoon. When you add color and Kool-Aid to it, kids are more likely to eat more than one serving, especially if they are making multiple colors. “
Shapiro said that eating corn syrup will lead to a quick burst of energy, which then quickly fades away and can lead to body tremors and increased sweating. Shapiro added that eating too much corn syrup can cause a host of health problems.
obesity of the liver and further diseases.
Frozen corn syrup gets a gelatinous consistency when stored in the freezer because it never freezes, but only gets “harder and thicker,” Shapiro said.
The corn syrup craze follows the recent viral honey challenge, when the creators ate bottles full of frozen honey, which can also be dangerous if eaten in excess. Reported by NBC News that eating too much frozen honey can cause diarrhea and stomach cramps in a person, as well as other potential effects.
Some creators accomplish two tasks of tandem cooking, mixing honey with corn syrup and then freezing it together.
