MetroHealth CEO Dr. Akram Boutros fired

The MetroHealth Board of Trustees on Monday evening, November 21, announced the dismissal of the President and CEO of the hospital system, Dr. Akram Boutros.

The board cited more than $1.9 million in additional compensation that Boutros approved for himself between 2018 and 2022 due to the termination.

“We are not aware of any organization that allows its CEO to independently evaluate and determine their eligibility for an additional bonus and how much, as Dr. Boutros did,” said Vanessa Whiting, chairman of the board of directors of MetroHealth.

Boutros intends to resign at the end of the year, to replace Irike Steedcurrently Executive Director of Sinai Chicago Health System.

During preparations for the change in CEO, Boutros’ remuneration was brought to the attention of the board by outside legal counsel.

Contrary to the board’s role in approving compensation to the CEO, Boutros “by his own admission, set specific benchmarks, self-assessed his performance against those benchmarks, and authorized more than $1,900,000 in additional bonuses to be paid to himself based on those benchmarks.” . estimates between,” the press release says.

On October 31, Boutros paid out over $2.1 million to the hospital system, including interest on bonus money. He reported the violation to the Ohio Ethics Commission on November 1.

Dr. Nabil Chehade will serve as acting CEO until Steed takes over as CEO and President on Dec. 5.

Boutros has been a transformational leader at MetroHealth since taking over the company in 2013.

During his tenure, MetroHealth has grown to over 20 community health centers, four hospitals, five MetroExpressCare branches, and 10 pharmacies. Most notably, he led the development of a $1 billion transformation of the system’s main campus on West 25th Street.
