Medical clinic to pay $120,000 for drug imports

Mount Vernon Medical Practice will pay $120,000 to the federal and state governments in compensation for illegal drug imports from a foreign source.

U.S. Attorney’s Office in Seattle said Skagit Family Health Clinic imported birth control drugs that were not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Skagit Valley Herald reported. informed.

“FDA approval is a critical way for government health programs to ensure that patients get the right drugs and devices,” Nick Brown, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, said in a press release. “We have no evidence that any patients have been harmed by these unapproved drugs, but government programs cannot pay clients for such a risk.”

Under the terms of the out-of-court settlement, the clinic will pay $72,000 to the state and just over $48,000 to the federal government.

The money will reimburse governments for their share of the costs paid for Medicaid claims between 2015 and 2020.

The US Department of Justice has settled this matter on behalf of the Office of the Inspector General of the US Department of Health and Human Services, the State Attorney General’s Office, and the State Health Administration.
