Healthcare payrolls remained strong in May, despite a slight decline from the previous month, as employers anticipate a possible lack of funding due to COVID-19 and cases and hospitalizations slowly stabilizes.
Employers in the sector added about 28,300 jobs last month, up from 36,800 jobs in April, according to preliminary data. In May, the industry contributed to the employment of 390,000 people across the economy.
The overall unemployment rate has remained unchanged over the past few months at 3.6%, with about 6 million people remaining unemployed in May. The unemployment rate was 3.5% in February 2020, a month before the start of the pandemic in the US.
An estimated 1.8 million people reported being unable to work last month due to pandemic-related business closures or losses, a number that has hardly changed since April.
